I have been a member of Newcastle Dance Society for two years. I have tried tap, jazz and street. The society is great! You initially have to pay what seems like a hefty fee to join but after that you can attend as many classes a week as you like and there are usually around 20 classes to choose from. The location of the classes is not far from campus and the dance rooms are good. Sometimes they are a bit crowded but this varies year by year on a dance class' popularity. As a complete beginner, the teachers have been welcoming and encouraging and classes are so much fun. The social side is hit and miss. You don't usually get to know people until the end of year show unless you attend the Wednesday night socials or are part of committee/ teaching committee and at first it can seem cliquey but this is the same with all societies so you just have to get involved. You can get involved with competitions throughout the year and/or choose to be in the final show. The show is amazing as you get to see all the dances other people have been working on and perform your own at 3 shows that are open to the public.

Every Wednesday a social is organised for the dancers with a different theme, helping us get to know the committee and older dancers. The classes are stimulating and challenging with 3 different ability levels so everybody can learn. With many opportunities including shows and competitions it is an amazing society to be a part of.

The dance society is a really good way to meet new people and is really inclusive. The dance teachers are really friendly and the competitions and show are really fun. The only downside of the society is that sometimes the lectures aren't very structured and sometimes classes are crowded but the socials and people are lovely.
