Durham is a good university with a world renowned reputation making it worthwhile regardless a few cons as a good degree from Durham can open many doors. However there are issues of class disparity, expensive living costs and a nightlife scene, though not bad, is struggling to cope with a growing student population

Durham is a very small city so sometimes for students it can feel very quiet. There are only a few clubs but lots of restaurants and cute cafes. Newcastle is only a 15 minute train ride away so there are plenty more opportunities on the doorstep!

Durham is a small scenic city and is a lot more peaceful than big cities, but is also only a quarter of an hour away from Newcastle by train, which gives the opens up everything that Newcastle has to offer as well. Nights out are good with plenty of pubs and bars and also a few small clubs open until 2am offering a variety of music on different nights of the week. If you are looking for bigger clubs which are open later, there's always the option of going to Newcastle with buses running late into the night and the first train back at 4:30am meaning you can easily get back after a night out. There is not a very wide range of shops in the city centre, but there are a few small clothes shops, charity shops and plenty of small supermarkets. The industrial estate, just outside of the city has many large supermarkets and clothes shops, and Newcastle has even more shops to offer as the Metro centre is located here, which is a very large shopping centre. Food in Durham is very good, with many affordable restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines. As well as these restaurants there are a lot of takeaways for food after night out or if you want food delivered. There are lots of options of things to do in Durham, such as scenic walks along the river or in the historic city, there is the Castle and the Cathedral which are beautiful historic buildings, you can hire a boat out on the river and there's even a small cinema. While there are many things to do in Durham, if it's missing anything, Newcastle will surely have it. Finally, Durham is a very affordable place to live, with the cheapest pint in a college bar being only £1.70. Drinks, food, club entry are all cheaper than most other cities in the UK.

Really great shopping and the like found in Newcastle, but Durham is a nice town to visit in the north.

Great value for money in regards to the cost of food/drinks/eating out but the cost of housing is so overpriced. Anything under £420 a month for a single room is cheap. Looking at around £500 a month is you want a large room close to the city centre.

Durham is a great place! The city is very small however, so may not be to everyone's taste. The locals are all very friendly, and the location is superb - you only have to walk a few minutes before you're in the middle of the countryside. Newcastle is only a 15 minute train or £1 bus ride away and is perfect if the small town feels are getting you down.

Plenty of shops, pretty city. Great place to see other places in the area toI. Nightlife is a little lacking.

Durham is a lovely City in the North of England. It has great restaurants and some nice bars. It is very picturesque with beautiful scenery, a cathedral and castle in the centre. It is a student town and the city is divided up into colleges making it a great community. Shopping isnt great but the Metrocentre is closeby. Public transport is bad making it difficult to get to places outside of Durham but Newcastle has lots to do and it is only a 10 min train journey from the city centre.

Great city! Big shopping centre where you can find everything you need, lots of student-friendly places to eat and, of course, brilliant nights out!

There is an array of restaurants and bars within durham, as well as many different shops which are within a five minute drive from university which is pretty useful.

Great central location in Durham city, all areas of the campus and city centre within walking distance with ample shops, bars, clubs - in particular the independent cafes and college bars

Durham is a very small city, so you quickly run out of things to do. There is the cathedral, the botanical gardens and lots of cafes and nice riverside walls, but that's about it. There isn't even a proper cinema! Shopping is okay - there are lots of supermarkets which you can get the bus to, for only £1 return. The city centre is okay, it has the basics. Nights out are pretty dire, everywhere closes at 2am and there are only 5 clubs to choose from, which all play the same music (cheesy pop and charts) so there isn't much variety. On the bright side, Newcastle is only 15 minutes away on the train, and that's great.

As a city, Durham is absolutely beautiful; it is small and very picturesque, with the cathedral at the centre of all the wonder. The clubs in Durham aren’t great, and they all close at 2am which is a bit early, but the pubs and bars are excellent. The Gala theatre is pretty good if you want to watch a movie, and there is the Durham market at the weekend which is rather good.

Very much enjoy Durham as a place, although is very small but despite this there are plenty of places to go out on nights out but not much to do in the daytime due to being small.

Durham is a beautiful and quiet city. It is rather quaint so perhaps not for those who want an exciting city life, there isn't great nightlife or gigs for example. However, there are decent restaurants, plenty of nice and affordable bars and pubs, and lots of beautiful walks in Durham and it's surroundings.

Large number of small clubs with two having free entry. Very high number of cafes included an even combination of chain and independent establishments. Some high street shops predominantly in the town centre. One small cinema with another odeon being built. Very high value for money average pint under £2

The nights out are actually far better than people make out to be. The shopping is basic but actually quite boutique. There are so many cafes and just beautiful

Durham is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the country - the cathedral and chapel are magnificent, there are some very quaint pubs and some lovely hills you can climb to get stunning views. That being said, it’s very hilly (lots of walking) and obviously very cold. It’s not the place for you if you like big, bustling cities but I love it, and it’s very cheap!

A beautiful place to study with picturesque architecture and riverside paths. Enough things to do throughout the year with events most weekends.

Quaint, old buildings with winding cobblestone roads. Durham is scenic but can also often be slightly miserable with its bleak weather and grey atmosphere

Durham is a beautiful city and ideal for students in my opinion. There are countless cafes hidden around the city and many restaurants to choose from as well. Nightlife isn’t the best and Durham is home to the worst nightclub in Europe but everyone has a soft spot for Klute regardless of its rep.
