World Chocolate Day: Ten tempting chocolatey recipes

Forget Christmas and forget your birthday; it’s World Chocolate Day, AKA your new favourite day of the year!

World Chocolate Day may sound like something I made up, solely to provide an excuse for eating unhealthily for 24 hours, but it’s a genuine celebration around the globe. It’s thought to have been created to commemorate the introduction of chocolate to Europe, but really, who cares about the details? On with the chocolate recipes!

You can feel free to call me Willy Wonka right now, because this is a recipe for making your very own chocolate. A helping of this isn’t quite as exciting as a chocolate river, but at least Augustus Gloop can’t swim in your mixture.

Don’t forget: this recipe doesn’t make your standard Cadbury’s milk chocolate bar; it actually tastes very different. If you’re not a fan of rich foods, I have to say that this first snack might not be right for you.

Mousse

This mousse is by far the easiest item to make on this list, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious. This is the ideal thing to reach for after a long day at your summer job.

Top tip: as the recipe says, the chilling process of this dish can be sped up by placing the mousse inside a freezer rather than a fridge. If you do decide to try that way though, make sure that you check on it regularly so that it doesn’t freeze completely!

Tiramisu

The name ‘tiramisu’ is likely to put off anybody who prefers drinking their coffee to eating it, but this recipe doesn’t actually include any! Instead, this cake’s filling is made up of mascarpone cheese and cream, as well as generous helpings of chocolate of course. It’s not quite traditional, but it’s definitely tasty!

Don’t forget: the chocolate liqueur/ brandy isn’t necessary for this particular recipe, so don’t feel like you have to include it. (Although, what better way to use up your leftover alcohol?!)

Vegan cake

This recipe (like most vegan ones do) claims that, if they weren’t told, ‘people would honestly never know’ that it was made without dairy products. For once, I have to say that I agree. This delicious cake has the perfect texture and is just as good- if not better- than any store bought cake made with milk and butter.

Top tip: the saying ‘you can have too much of a good thing’ is definitely applicable here! Cut your cake into small slices to avoid a sickly feeling after each helping.

Tiffin

Just in case you’re anything like me and ovens really aren’t your thing, I thought I’d include another ‘fridge- bake’ to go along with the tiramisu. This tiffin can be whipped up in no time, with no risk of your kitchen being burnt to pieces!

Don’t forget: tiffin can be made with pretty much any sweet ingredients, so don’t let the inclusion of raisins put you off using this recipe. If fruit in desserts isn’t your thing, just leave them out and there will still be more than enough mixture for the base.

Scotch Creme Egg

This may sound like a dish that will instantly cause all of your teeth to fall out, but it isn’t quite as sickly as it sounds! This fuss free recipe provides a new way of enjoying a somewhat overrated type of chocolate.

Top tip: if you’re having trouble finding Creme Eggs now that Easter is long behind us, head for your local newsagents or have a quick Google and order some online!

Milkshake

If the only milkshakes that you’ve ever made are the powder and milk kind, this recipe might well open your mind to a whole new world! Like Charlie in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, you’ll probably find yourself craving one at the weirdest moments.

Don’t Forget: ½ cup is equal to 170g or 6oz. Also, if you want to pretend to be in Riverdale and drink this with a straw, make sure that you use one made of paper rather than plastic!

Pizza

Sweet pizza is one of those miraculous inventions that never should have come about, but you’re kind of glad that it did. This is a gorgeous dessert, especially after a takeout pizza (let’s hope those Domino’s vouchers from Fresher’s week are still in date) and it’s fairly inexpensive to make.

Top tip: if you don’t fancy adding hazelnuts to your pizza, consider opting for crushed Oreos or caramel pieces instead. One of the best things about this recipe is that the toppings can be pretty much whatever you want them to be. Chocolate mice anybody?

Gluten-free chocolate chip cookies

Finally! A gluten free cookie that doesn’t taste like sand! This American recipe makes for mouth watering biscuits that you’ll most likely want to devour all in one go.

Don’t forget: for those of you who aren’t used to gluten-free cooking, xanthan gum is a thickening agent that can be bought from most supermarkets. It’s needed to prevent the cookie batter from being too dry and separating.

Salted caramel brownie

What better way to finish this list than with chocolate brownies? These particular treats are gooey; they taste delicious when warm and when cold, and they look heavenly. What more could anybody possibly ask for?

Top tip: pair these brownies with a scoop of ice cream and some whipped cream for the ultimate dessert!
