This stunning astrological event will be enough to get anyone interested in the night sky, and it happens every year!
The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most significant astronomical events of 2022. Here is everything you need to know in preparation for the event, where to view it and an alternate take on what the meteor shower could mean to you.
What is it ?
The meteor shower Perseid, made an appearance in our skies during July but peaks during the 9th and 15th of August, being most visible on the 12th and 13th. This significant meteor shower is due to the Earth slamming into the remains of a comet called Swift-Tulle, this comet has an orbital period of 133 years and is in an orbital resonance with Jupiter.
How to best view it
The meteor shower will be most visible at the darkest time of the day which occurs between midnight and 5:30 am. To see the meteor shower the best that you can, there are a few precautions you need to take, such as reducing the amount of light pollution in your area by going to a field or a park, obviously doing so as safely as possible!
As hard as it can be, not looking at your phone for at least 10 minutes before the event will prove to be more than beneficial as your eyes will have better adapted to the darkness. No equipment is needed to view the event, only your eyes and the darkness.
What is the psychological significance of the meteor shower?
Meteor showers have always been a phenomenon that although scientifically makes sense, will always be something magical as these vessels of light rain across our sky. Throughout history different cultures and groups have viewed these meteor showers as mysterious objects sent from a greater force than ourselves, often linked with superstition, spirituality and religion. Meteor showers have been seen as both good and bad omens, going from being linked to illness and death to reincarnation and new paths.
