The University of Southampton’s Most Popular and Interesting Clubs and Societies

Joining clubs and societies is an important part of the university experience, and a great way to make friends and spend your free time!


Here’s a list of Southampton’s finest that you should check out!

1. Southampton University Swimming Club

This club is infamous for its friendliness and epic Wednesday night socials; you’re bound to bump into them at Jesters. It’s also very inclusive; there’s a recreational squad for those who just like to swim and a competitive squad for if you’re a little more serious. No matter your level, they’ll make you welcome!

2. SUSU RAG

This is the main fundraising organisation at the uni and well worth getting involved with. These guys organise tonnes of fundraising events for a number of different charities, including the infamous sports societies naked calendar, speed dating and zombie chases.

3. Quidditch

Southampton Quidditch Club boasts ranking first place at the British Quidditch Cup and is apparently the UK’s largest Quidditch club. Definitely a good one to go and satisfy your inner Harry Potter nerd!

4. Cake Decorating Society

This is a wholesome way to make friends with other sweet treat enthusiasts. They cater for every level of cake decorator and the best bit? You get to take the cake home!

5. CoppaFeel! UBT Southampton

This society is about something we all love: BOOBS! More specifically, CoppaFeel works towards building breast cancer awareness and how to properly check breasts for any warning signs. A friendly and fun society with a worthy and important cause.

6. Pottery

Another lovely and very friendly society; PotSoc holds sessions every Thursday night at Cantell School and I can also say from personal experience that they take it very well when you accidentally message them a selfie on Facebook…

7. Boxing

A physically and mentally challenging sport, boxing is a fantastic work out that isn’t for the faint hearted. This club, however, is excellent at catering for all abilities; no matter if you’ve ever boxed before, this club welcomes newcomers and the coaches are all super friendly and helpful. They also hold exclusive ladies’ sessions if enough girls show interest.

8. Amnesty

You’ve more than likely heard of Amnesty International: an organisation that campaigns for the promotion of human rights all over the world. A truly important charity, joining the student group will give you great friends, fun events and the chance to help make a difference in the world for good.

9. Mountaineering

SUMC are well-known for being an inclusive and fun society that organises multiple trips away, both abroad and within the UK. They also hold weekly trips to indoor walls and training sessions that cater for all levels!

10. Folk Music Society

This society runs a number of ceilidhs and gigs throughout the year and is perfect for your country loving side! Whether you have a specific musical skill, love folk dancing or just listening, check out this society for a unique evening!
