Find out how to deal with the transition to online learning with this guide.

The rise of online learning has transformed university life for students, hopefully for the better. Almost 50% of UK students said they expected to learn more online than in their regular classes after the first lockdown. Adapting to this new virtual way of life is a learning curve for everyone but, with some smart adjustments, you’ll be able to thrive and enjoy student living.

Here are some things you can do to make your transition into digital learning easier:

Optimise your internet connection

By optimising your internet connection, you can focus on the task at hand without worrying about any technical mishaps. If you can, connect your computer directly to your router for the best possible connection. If you only have Wi-Fi, then sit as close to your router as possible. Remember, the faster your speed, the better your video quality will be.

In case of an emergency, your smartphone can provide a useful backup solution when needed. Most virtual classroom software companies offer mobile apps. Just don’t get caught out by data usage fees.

Participate in online learning

To get the most out of your e-learning experience, direct participation is needed. Be ready to ask lots of questions and put in the work to achieve the best results. You’re as responsible for your learning as your lecturer, so remember that learning is a two-way process.

Don’t neglect your social life

As an online student, you’re already part of a huge community. There’s a wealth of student-run societies and organisations dedicated to networking and professional development. These groups hold virtual lectures with industry professionals, as well as in-person meet-ups. With a reliable virtual platform, you and your classmates can attend regular events and get to know each other. Using these platforms helps you form a collaborative digital community, where fellow members have a go-to place where they can easily find the next meeting, chat with each other, and share content.

It can take some getting used to, but the digital world is now a key element of student life. By optimising your internet, engaging with your course, and joining online student communities, you’ll be able to thrive in the new normal and beyond.
