Five Halloween treats you need in your life this spooky season

Halloween’s just around the corner, so get your spook on with these tasty treats.

Halloween’s not going to look the same this year (meaning no trick or treating, or banging student parties unfortunately), but that doesn’t mean we can’t throw some spooky themed fun into the mix!

Over lockdown, many of us took to baking to pass the time, and who says those endeavours should stop now? Put your skills to good use during Halloween with these spooky treats.

1. Spooky cupcakes

You’ll need some cupcakes for this so grab your favourite baking book and whip up a batch of whatever flavour cakes you fancy (or head to Tesco’s and pick up some of their finest… No judgement here). To make them spookier, we recommend using devil’s food, or piping a squirt of jam into the centre to look like blood. Now, place a small amount of icing on top of the cupcakes and then stick a marshmallow on top of the icing, aligning it vertically.

Roll out your fondant icing thinly, and cut out twelve 10cm circles. Lay the circles over the marshmallows you placed on the cupcakes and they should start to look like ghosts. Now, use the black icing to create ghoulish faces for your ghosts. Serve at your scary movie night for maximum fright!

2. Halloween rocky road

Rocky road is one of the easiest treats to make, and one that you can customise to match the season. For the Halloween version, simply mix in some themed chocolates and sweets.

We will start with a traditional rocky road recipe. Here at Student Hut, we like this one. However, to make this treat a little more scrumptious, we recommend adding in glace cherries, honeycomb pieces, your favourite chocolate, and maybe even a little stem ginger if you want to spice things up. Once you’ve made up the rocky road, go to town adding Halloween sweets such as gummy worms or chocolate eyeballs. Finish it off with a drizzling of white chocolate, made to look like cobwebs.

Rocky road is totally customisable so you can also swap out the ingredients for vegan or vegetarian alternatives if you would prefer.

3. Creepy cake

Now, if you’re looking for something that’ll really impress your friends and family this Halloween, we’d recommend making a two-tiered cake. To make it suitably festive, pick a pumpkin or vegetable sponge cake (that can be part of the trick, and also help you to feel better about scoffing tons of cake this Halloween) and then decorate it with cobwebs, caramel apples, bats or witches’ fingers.

For inspiration, or cake recipes, we love these ones from Tesco:

To create the decorations, you can use fondant icing and mold different shapes and dye it different colours to achieve the desired effect. Make your cake unique by sculpting the spookiest things you can think of!

4. Mummy sausage rolls

And if you’re after something a little more savoury, why not try your hand at mummy sausage rolls? Simply cut pastry into strips before wrapping the sausages, and then dip them into some blood tomato sauce for a spooky effect.

You can find the full recipe here.
