Bones, berries, and the Backyardigans. This is a small selection of our favourite trends from last year.

TikTok is a white water rapid of content and ever-changing trends. The creativity of its userbase has led to many interesting takes on popular pieces of media. A user, challenge, or sound goes viral and almost everyone has their own interpretation of it. Here are four of our favourite trends from last year.

Berries and cream

Unless you lived in the US in the early 2000s, you may not be familiar with this Starburst ad. But if you use TikTok regularly, I’m certain you are. This oddball ad for a new range of sweets took the app by storm. You liked one #berriesandcreamtok video and fell down the rabbit hole.

Then came the remixes. Users went to town splicing the audio from the ad with current or classic pop songs. There were varying degrees of skill when making the edits, but often the funniest ones were the bad ones.

The trend even found its way back to the star of the ad. Jack Ferver (they/them), the original actor, currently has over two million followers on TikTok.

Noodle the pug

Is it a bones or no bones day? This fortune-telling senior pug rose to fame after their owner began making videos of him. A gentle pat on the head, then the owner lifts him. If the elderly dog puts his feet out, it is a “bones” day. If not, it’s a “no bones” day.

have the best day everyone! remember the RULES 🔮🦴🔮

This prophetic pup acts as a fortune teller of sorts. Is it a bones day filled with energy and good news? Or is it a no bones day? Whatever the outcome, I’m sure we can all relate to sometimes just not wanting to stand up.

Silhouette challenge

Warning: slightly thirsty TikTok trend alert. This challenge definitely started out on the thirst trap side of TikTok. A user stands in a doorway as Paul Anka’s classic Put Your Head On My Shoulders plays. With a change in music to Streets by Doja Cat, the lighting dims. The sultry lighting leaves nothing more than a silhouette visible - usually in a state of undress.

Eventually, the challenge spread across all sides of TikTok. It became an opportunity to show off something, like cosplay or a pet. It also became a great vehicle for humour.

Backyardigans

Who would have thought that a show aimed at nursery age children would have such a hold on the TikTok community? Perhaps it’s because the show’s aim was to introduce kids to different genres of music. Lots of different genres mean more opportunities to make jokes and challenges. There were three standouts in 2021, the first being “Into the Thick of It”.

The powerful vocals of “International Super Spy” was another of the kid-friendly earworms that had a vice grip on TikTokers.

But “Castaways” was by far the most popular. Almost everyone on the platform knows the words off by heart. This attempt to teach children about the bossa nova has been used as a background for all sorts. It has even received the high-pitched remix treatment.
