Saturday, February 5th is World Nutella Day. Get a jar or two, gather some friends, and check out these interesting suggestions for how to celebrate.

Established in 2007, World Nutella Day is an opportunity to indulge in hazelnut-flavoured goodness. You could make a day of it with your friends, family, or housemates. Mark February 5th in your calendar and try some of these interesting ways to celebrate this popular spread.

Dip and dunk

We’ve all heard about some of the things that go with Nutella. Bananas and strawberries are classics. But why not try some more adventurous combos? Assemble a platter of different fruits and snacks to dunk into a bowl of the stuff. Pineapple chunks, carrot sticks, and salted pretzels could all be fun sensory experiences. Little tip: some spoons may help you avoid a mess, but finger food is always more fun.

Pancake stack

One thing the US does exceptionally well is pancakes. Follow this basic fluffy pancake recipe, then slather the layers with Nutella for an indulgent brunch or dessert. Pairs particularly well with bananas, strawberries, or blueberries.

  • 135g plain flour
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2tbsp caster sugar
  • 130ml milk (substitutes work fine)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2tbsp melted butter

Combine the sifted dry ingredients in one bowl and whisk together the egg, milk, and butter in another. Pour the wet mixture into the flour mixture, beating until you have a smooth texture. Add butter or oil to a pan on medium heat. Once the pan is hot enough, pour a ladle of the batter into the pan. Flip the pancake once it starts to bubble. Repeat this until you’ve used all the pancake batter.

Easy egg-free brownies

If you want something simple but delicious, try these three-ingredient brownies. They’re guaranteed to fill your kitchen with delightful, chocolatey aromas.

Mash two bananas to a smooth consistency. Sift 85g plain flour, then combine it with the mashed banana and 240g (one cup) of Nutella. Make sure the mixture is smooth and shiny. Pour the batter into a lined, rectangular pan and bake for 20-25 at 170 degrees Celsius (350F).

As tempting as it may be, make sure you allow them to cool before cutting them!

Milkshakes

One of the many benefits of owning a blender is the ease with which you can make milkshakes. A Nutella milkshake is a great comfort food. For every person you’re catering for, add a couple of scoops of your favourite vanilla ice cream, a splash of your choice of milk, and two big spoonfuls of Nutella. If you want an extra chocolatey treat, use chocolate ice cream. Oreos, peanut butter, bananas and salted caramel make great additions.

Mocha

Love coffee and have a Nutella-craving sweet tooth? Add a spoonful of Nutella to piping hot milk of your choice. Mix it vigorously, until all the spread has dissolved. Panic not! It can take a little while for it to dissolve into a smooth mixture. At this time it may look like it won’t mix but the Nutella has to melt properly from the heat before it will fully immerse itself. You can either leave it like this for a warming hazelnut hot chocolate, or you can add coffee for a delightful mocha. A shot of espresso or a spoon of instant coffee will do the trick.
