Finding your tribe at university

At university, there's a high chance that you'll make friends for life. This advice should ensure that you're well-positioned to make it happen.

When going to university, and starting a new chapter of your life, the anticipation around starting can be very exciting. Uni is a great opportunity to make friends for life, and no matter who you are, or where your interests lie, you’re sure to meet like-minded people. Here are some suggestions to help find your tribe:

1. Have an open mind

This period of your life is the best time to look for new experiences, so if you get the opportunity to go to a social gathering, say yes, even if it doesn’t sound like your usual thing. You need to get yourself out there, otherwise you can’t expect to find ‘your type of people’.

2. Get online

From WhatsApp groups for your halls to the Student Union’s Twitter feed, the best way to find out what’s going on and initiate contact with fellow students is via social media. Get involved, and keep your eyes open for activities that appeal to you - you could even volunteer to help organise meet-ups.

3. Be yourself

Being true to yourself is the best way forward when meeting new people (you don’t want to be stuck playing a fake version of yourself for the next three years!). The group of people who constantly make you laugh and happy are the tribe to stick with.

4. Join a society

Joining clubs and societies is one of the easiest ways of meeting people and making

friends; you’re guaranteed to find others who share your interests. And it also gives you the opportunity to experience different cultures and backgrounds, and gain skills that will look brilliant on your CV.

What are you waiting for? Take the first step and start this wonderful new chapter of your

life and find the tribe for you.
