George Floyd

In light of the recent, horrific events in America, there has been a global outpouring of pain, anguish and, most importantly, support for the Black Lives Matter cause.

People all over the world are coming together, both on social media and in the streets to protest the gross injustices they are witnessing in the USA.

Here at Student Hut, we are committed to standing up for what is right. Due to this commitment, we want to unequivocally voice our support of the Black Lives Matter movement in their struggle for equality and we will continue to do so for as long as it is necessary.

We know a lot of our readers will also be keen to make an impact. Even if you’re unable to attend protests or outdoor demonstrations, there are plenty of ways that you can support the cause. We’ve compiled some resources below:

What petitions are there?

Petitions are a great way to voice your support for a cause in an official capacity. Most only take a few seconds to complete and every signature represents another person standing up for what they believe is right.

Here are some that you can sign to vocalise your solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, no matter where you are in the world:

Justice for George Floyd

Tell Minneapolis City Council to defund the police

Amnesty International: Demand justice for George Floyd

Stand with Bre: Justice for Breonna Taylor

#JusticeforBre: Fire the police officers who killed Breonna Taylor

#JusticeforFloyd: Demand the officers who killed George Floyd are charged with murder

Change: Battle racism by updating GCSE reading lists

Where can you donate to support the BLM movement?

If you have the means to do so, there are plenty of ways for you to support the cause financially. Even if you can’t afford to send a donation right now, you can always share these resources with those who can, and help to get the message out there.

Reclaim the Block

Reclaim the Block is a grassroots organisation seeking to guarantee community funding for social causes in Minneapolis. Their work includes investment in violence prevention, social housing, resources for young people and support for emergency mental health response teams.

ActBlue Bail Funds

This charity provides financial support to people who have been arrested whilst protesting against police brutality in America. Whilst there are many different bail funds for protests in individual cities, this fund will distribute donations to protesters across the country.

Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ)

The SURJ network is an activist group that is committed to combating racial injustice. A lot of their work involves getting majority-white communities involved with the fight against racism. They have chapters all across the USA and are always looking for support.

Minnesota Freedom Fund (Donations currently paused due to the huge influx of support)

A fund to support the protesters in Minneapolis and around the country. Whilst they are currently not taking donations, they have shared a list of other organisations that can be supported while they reorganise.

ActBlue: Support the Black Lives Matter Global Network

This petition is also run by ActBlue and was set-up as a resource for supporting the Black Lives Matter Global Network, who are dedicated to fighting injustice across the world.
