Get into the rhythm for 2022 with our tips for staying organised at uni.

The New Year is here. It’s a time when many of us might find ourselves thinking about ways to re-invent ourselves, setting goals to become the person we’ve always wanted to be. It can be challenging knowing where to start so, in this article, we’re going to share our advice on preparing academically for the year ahead so you’re set for the ready for the new semester.

A fresh start

The key to preparing for the year ahead is to list the tasks you need to complete. This could include preparing for your modules or buying new stationery to get you started.

You don’t want to start the new semester thinking about work you still haven’t finished from last semester, so don’t forget to tie your loose ends by finishing any incomplete notes or assignments.

A moment of clarity

Making sure you’re clear on module requirements will save you time and unnecessary stress later in the semester. Have a look on your course page and read your module handbooks if they’re available, noting down any questions you have for your module tutor.

Go over any relevant module content from last semester and familiarise yourself with any key concepts from your new modules. It’s a good idea to do a little bit of reading around your module or look at readings your lecturers have set you for the holidays because you’ll feel much more prepared when the new semester starts.

Organise your study space

Having an organised study space is really important for being productive, so be sure to file your notes from last semester to give yourself as much space as possible.

Organise your desk so that you can easily access your notes. If you have shelves above your desk, use these to store your files away, so you have more desk space for your laptop and any books you’ll be using. Only keep the essentials on your desk; this way, your study space will be clutter-free.

Now’s the time to buy new notebooks and stationery. Many shops will still be running promotions at the start of the year, so be sure to get stocked up on new pens and desk tidies to make sure you have everything you need.

Create a timetable

Our best piece of advice for ensuring you make the most out of your time at uni this year is to create a timetable. There are lots of templates to choose from online. One of our favourites is available for free on Canva. Be sure to note any upcoming deadlines for your course, so you don’t forget to submit any assignments.

Having a work-life balance is super important when you’re at uni. It can be so easy to prioritise your studies and neglect your physical and mental wellbeing, so make sure you schedule time for relaxation. Keep an eye on your Students’ Union website and see if they offer free wellbeing workshops, therapy sessions, or meditation classes.

Set goals

Now’s the time to reflect on the progress you made last year and think about how you can move forward. It’s so empowering to think about everything you’ve achieved, and it can really give you a boost.

Look at your feedback from last semester and set yourself some goals for the new academic year. If you’re unsure where to focus your energy, have a chat with your academic tutor and they’ll be able to help you to make a list of goals.

We hope these tips help you to get off to a successful start this new semester. Remember you’ve got this!
