Freshers week at york is run by the colleges. They have a system called STYCs (second and third year contacts) which works amazingly. It means when you move in there are loads of people from your college there waiting to help you get your stuff upstairs and then later to show you the clubs! The nights are great, although different from other uni’s, they are cheesy and this works great. Because you are in colleges you have a specific college freshers tshirt on so it is easy to find other freshers and STYCs from your college throughout the week. Useful tip: keep in contact with your STYCs, they make great friends through the rest ofuni and know how everything works!!

The move-in itself was very friendly and well organised; upon arriving at Halifax College, I was met by a STYC that showed me to my room and helped with luggage. The first day was very exciting and I enjoyed the STYCs organising all of my flatmates just chatting and hanging out in the kitchen. The week itself was awful, though. As someone who had never really had any experience with alcohol, all of the events were alcohol and club related. I felt out of my depth during the evenings and lonely throughout the days. The Freshers band also cost £40- a total rip off for nothing but club nights! I was unable to attend Freshers fair because the line to enter building was waaay too long. I'd recommend going to your course inductions and joining societies- that's how I made pals since clubbing wasn't my thing. However, it's great if you ARE into clubbing! Just would have appreciated more variety.

University of York freshers week is organised by each college individually and apart from some joint club nights with other colleges, with your college wristband you can get into all of your college’s freshers’ events. There is a good mix of chilled and club nights. You can really make your week what you want it to be, the club nights are good but I didn’t want to go out for some of the nights and so I went to a cheese night and a jazz night in the college bar.

Really good nightlife locations and a good first night to get to know people. The bar crawls never went to plan but the night still went well.

My college had 2nd and 3rd years helping us move in and throughout the whole week. it was so good to have that help and those few people to go to with questions. they made the week so much fun by showing us all the ropes of not only the uni but social and night life too. meeting new people is the least of your worries even though it is most people’s biggest worry. there are so many opportunities to meet people. my main advice is to just have fun and take in the glory that is first year.

I felt the move in experience was very well organised and there were plenty of people on hand to help. I also enjoyed how well organised the freshers evening events were and that having second and third years on hand to help with any questions or problems was very useful and made the whole experience less daunting.

Move in is really great because so many students within your college are on hand to help. The whole week is organised meticulously with a range of events from bar crawls against other colleges to full-works formals. The STYC and STYM system is particularly good at accomodating freshers who need advice or just want to make some more friends.

It was a great freshers week, very well run and great fun. The social side was particularly well done as there was lots going on

I lived off campus (as a first year) so was a little excluded from the events during freshers week, however after talking to college reps, I was soon involved in all of the great events.

Freshers week was great. There is loads to do both for those who drink and those who don't. You will love it.

Move-in was great, we were helped by a bunch of really friendly stycs and the whole process was welcoming and simple. Meeting new people was easy because there was plenty going on to get people active. A pro-tip would be to stock up on foil! It means you haven't got to wash up pesky pans and with a small kitchen you're out of each other's way faster.

Freshers was cool and enlightening, felt like I had a new life. Everyone was so friendly and I didn’t feel like I was away from home.

Best week ever lol. Had such a wicked time meeting new people and making good friends. Basically was pissed for the lot of it. Had a sick time and would pay so much to relive it

Arrived a week before with a bunch of people I knew would arrive early too.. had a week of freshers before the actual freshers and was probably a little too exhausted for the real thing.

Was an excellent week with lots of events and made friends and met lots of people. I hope next years is just as good. Thanks to my university and college for organising such a good week full of day time and evening activities

move in was great with STYCs helping us move who were really friendly. There were lots of non drinking events which were fun, not to say that the drinking events weren't fun!!

My college (as do the others) has a system whereby second and third year students look after the freshers and show them the ropes. This allowed us all to relax and just socialise worry free.

Although it was a daunting week it was helped with the use of STYCs who are second and third year contacts assigned to a particular flat/house to look after Freshers and to make sure everything is organised and everyone feels included. Separating the fresher's nights into different colleges also helped make it easier to know what to do on what night.

Freshers week was by far the best week of my life. Whether it was going out and meeting people every night or football trials, the whole week was fantastic. I loved to integrate into Derwent College and the STYC system really made me feel at home.

Met new people, went out every night, got drunk and lost on many occasions. University of York student nights were an integral part of our fresher's week, alongside activities and nights out organised by respective colleges at the university.

Smooth move in and events all week, freshers week for me was very fun! There could have been more to do during the day and the non drinking events could have been more publicised but the drinking events were great!

What a cracking time! Pulled up and was met immediately by two second year students who were super welcoming and who helped carry all my stuff up three floors! I'm still friends with them now, a year and a half later. Little things like that made York feel like home straight away.
