Moving in was a very smooth process, however I have since found out that my flatmates had second and third year students help them to move in but I was just with my mum and sister. once I had moved in I was left in my room for a few hours until I received a knock at the door from one of these second and third year students and he told me to go to the kitchen as everyone was in there. There was then an opportunity for us to drink, play games, and ask the second and third year students any questions we had. After this I had already made a good enough friend to show our rooms to each other and we did our make up together. Then everyone met downstairs and we went out together, following the organised schedule of events that the uni had put on, and this happened every night, with the company of the second and third year student, whose job was to look after us. I loved how organised my freshers week was, you had to buy a ticket beforehand for all events of that week, which meant that there was no stress or bickering over which club to go to, as our tickets were only valid in certain places on certain nights. I’d tell students to literally go to everything that you physically and mentally can, and to sleep a lot and drink plenty of water! I made my best friends in freshers week. The freshers festival in my opinion was too busy and I couldn’t move around so I left. Maybe each college at the uni should have a certain time slot or something.

Freshers week was sick met two of the guys I’d be friends with for life. Whatever has happened through past schooling of whatever freshers week gives you a clean slate. Everyone is in the exact same situation and it is very important to notice that. Just make sure you take initiative and it will always be met with positive response.

Good way of having the freshers fully involved by having second and third years guide the freshers all week long.

It was fun with lots of Nightlime events and lots of new people to meet. Everyone was quite friendly and although I experienced culture shock at first it quickly left when I met my first group of friends. Everyone was really open and friendly and the events were top notch ranging from club nights to movie nights to game nights to dog petting day time events and of course the freshers fair. My advice to everyone will be to be as open and friendly as possible. Hey

The uni has a scheme called Stycs- these are second and third year contacts who are assigned to your flat in freshers week and take you out- they definitely help you to meet more people and help settle you in!

Freshers week at york is run by the colleges. They have a system called STYCs (second and third year contacts) which works amazingly. It means when you move in there are loads of people from your college there waiting to help you get your stuff upstairs and then later to show you the clubs! The nights are great, although different from other uni’s, they are cheesy and this works great. Because you are in colleges you have a specific college freshers tshirt on so it is easy to find other freshers and STYCs from your college throughout the week. Useful tip: keep in contact with your STYCs, they make great friends through the rest ofuni and know how everything works!!

My college had 2nd and 3rd years helping us move in and throughout the whole week. it was so good to have that help and those few people to go to with questions. they made the week so much fun by showing us all the ropes of not only the uni but social and night life too. meeting new people is the least of your worries even though it is most people’s biggest worry. there are so many opportunities to meet people. my main advice is to just have fun and take in the glory that is first year.

It was a great freshers week, very well run and great fun. The social side was particularly well done as there was lots going on

Move-in was great, we were helped by a bunch of really friendly stycs and the whole process was welcoming and simple. Meeting new people was easy because there was plenty going on to get people active. A pro-tip would be to stock up on foil! It means you haven't got to wash up pesky pans and with a small kitchen you're out of each other's way faster.

Freshers was cool and enlightening, felt like I had a new life. Everyone was so friendly and I didn’t feel like I was away from home.

Although it was a daunting week it was helped with the use of STYCs who are second and third year contacts assigned to a particular flat/house to look after Freshers and to make sure everything is organised and everyone feels included. Separating the fresher's nights into different colleges also helped make it easier to know what to do on what night.

Freshers week was by far the best week of my life. Whether it was going out and meeting people every night or football trials, the whole week was fantastic. I loved to integrate into Derwent College and the STYC system really made me feel at home.
