The University of Manchester

This is a well resourced, highly equipped and aesthetic university with high research. There are many social opportunities with hundreds of societies to join, however teaching quality should be improved and more one to one tutor/ progress sessions should be implemented to fully aid the students weaknesses and struggles with their degree.

The university is in a very nice city, it all had a very nice feel to it. The quality of teaching/lectures is not as good as one would hope for the amount of debt we are getting ourselves into as students. The academic support is considerably poor. Halls are good, social side is amazing. There isn't much guidance as to what work you're supposed to be doing on your course, can be very easy to find yourself lost. And because lecturers and academic advisors don't see you as a priority, the lack of support/care can mean you struggle on your course.

Careers service are brilliant however specific departments vary as to the standard of teaching and support.

The campus is large and very culturally diverse in its students. Lage range of courses offered however poor organisation and administration and also examining of my masters course.

Some professors are good researchers in their respective fields but some of them are not great teachers, I believe there is need to improve on those skills. Some buildings are old and very cold in winter. Not enough study spaces.

Psychology course - could be a lot more guidance in terms of assessment but teaching was good overall. Careers service hold a lot of events and support in terms of career development and help with part time jobs while you study at the university

Facilities are great academically. Organisation of the course and communication with students can let it down however.

Whilst the standards are set high there is a lack in quality facilities and teaching at the university

I am currently in second year reading Physics with Theoretical Physics at the University of Manchester. I find the course fairly enjoyable, but with little room for choice with regards to optional modules (one choice module per year so far). The support network at the university also seems to be somewhat lacking, especially in terms of mental health (I've been diagnosed with bipolar). On the other hand, the facilities are fantastic! Libraries are abundant with high-quality books, textbooks and journals, as well as computers, printers and virtually any technology that you'd regularly use. The Alan Gilbert learning commons is extremely useful too, as it's open 24 hours a day and provides a nice quiet environment in which to do work. The Physics building is extremely well equipped, and has recently received an expansion in the form of the new Schuster annex, which provides more study spaces. Laboratories have sufficient equipment, although lots of said equipment is 20 - 30 years old (not that this really matters). Lecture theatres are very large, and are a good space to learn in. Lectures are also recorded and released as podcasts which is very useful should you miss a lecture. The university careers service is easily accessible and provides useful advice. Physics students have a compulsory session with the Physics careers advisor at the start of second year, which is very useful in order to learn about the wide variety of potential career routed available to students, as well as the internship and grad scheme support available through the careers service. Overall, I would say that Manchester is a good university, although the experience doesn't feel personal, and can feel like you're lost in the system with the thousands of students enrolling every year.

The campus and facilities available to students are very good. There is good support available for students with regards to course work load and workshops available for students. There are many study spaces available as well. There is a plethora of student societies to choose from sports to more creative societies. The campus is lost to the main city and there are many shops available to do your food and clothes shopping. The student union supports its students by organising student events especially in stressful periods such as the run up to exams.

After working really hard to get into the ‘university of my dreams’, it’s really interesting how my opinion has changed after a year of finally being here. Manchester in general is a fantastic city, and I’m so glad I chose to put in the hours to get into the Russel group university I’m in (I’ve already met some of the best teachers and lecturers I’ve ever had and my course content couldn’t be better). University in general, however, has proven to be something other than I thought: since the recent strikes, I have realised that students are continuously being treated as consumers, and the university’s services as a product. Manchester is wonderful, but I definitely feel that the relationship between faculty and students is something that needs to be improved.

The course is generally good, with the lectureres being supportive of studies, informative and helpful with questions and problems. The campus buildings are very accessible and easy to get to. The student union is currently under building work but the organisation is very supportive of students and the union itself proves a lot for students. I am yet to use the career services but I've been told they are very good. The organisation itself is okay, the administration staff (and I say administration, not lecturers) mishandled the strikes situation over this last semester massively and it kind of proved how little they really care about the students honestly.

The library and facilities are great, though space is an issue considering the number of students in the university and the available seats in the library. In terms of the course in LLB, getting good lecturers and seminar takers can be a bit of a gamble. On some occasions you’ll get really good lecturers and really structured modules, other times you might just end up with really messy mods and horrible lecturers

Overall, a bad experience. The teaching on my course could be improved. However, there are high tech facilities which are very nice. Students and staff show a lot of prejudice.

The city is great and theres a lot going on but the university definitely doesnt care about its staff or its students. I guess like many big universities it gets lost in sharing facts and stats about how great it is(e.g. employability ratings) and doesnt see students are unhappy, doesnt support them, and treats them with no emotion whatsoever.

The campus is very nice been having work done recently so it looks nicer. Good computer facilities, water fountains, lots of places to eat. One thing that could be improved is that the lecturers were on strike for 4 weeks and we weren't reimbursed any money for the loss of teaching hours.

Yeah alright I guess theres lots of indie bars and night clubs around like 42s which I would recommend, yeah it’s jist pretty dope innit

The school itself is pretty cool. Its rich in history. We have great alumni who have made impact in the humanity. We have a beautiful campus with manchester metropolitan university and royale northern college of music university.

Mixed and unfair marking, not enough direction. Students often feel ignored, however completely depends on the lecturer. Had some amazing teachers and some who clearly have no idea what they're doing.

It's a good uni but how good depends on what you're learning. For research heavy subjects like chemistry it's a good course because the lecturers will provide insight into their own research. But for things like pharmacy it's unnecessarily hard with lots of extra pointless exercises

Accommodation maintenance is really good, if something is broken they fix it immediately, Security on campus isn’t great,

The campus might not be the most beautiful, but the facilities are very good. The library is huge with loads of seating (this is a big deal!) and the gym is really good

The campus at University of Manchester is very well kept and very modern. Modifications to the campus are currently under construction as well, improving the facilities even further. The Students' Union is also currently undergoing a refurbishment, and now has many new places to eat. The Students' Union does need more activities, however. I know some Universities have their SU at the centre of nightlife, but this is not the case with our SU. Maybe some more restaurants and cafes as well as bars would be great. The careers service in my school is excellent, however I cannot speak for anything outside of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences. The organisation of my usual course (medicine) is appalling, however, as is Neuroscience, which is my intercalated BSc this year. The medical course is way too large (the biggest medical school in the country) and therefore resources are spread way too thin. The library is very big and has a huge range of books, the staff and services there are all excellent. The only problem is a lack of seating - it can be difficult to get a seat during exam period.
