Portsmouth

Portsmouth is generally a bit run down, but the area of Southsea is definitely a lovely place to walk around and see things. There are lots of restaurants with a range of cuisines and cool pubs and bars that are relatively cheap. There are a range of things to do close to the sea, such as the aquarium, the arcade and the D Day Museum. While not quite on the map as a major city yet, there are definitely things to keep Portsmouth on your to-visit list.

Portsmouth is a great city in general. The nights out are good, with lots of variety (clubs, strip of pubs) and all in one area very close to the Uni. There are loads of restaurants, if you're willing/able to travel a little further out of the city there are loads of really nice places to eat (Port Solent eg). There is a fair amount to do, shopping is quite boring. It's relatively cheap if you go to the right places on the right nights.

Good night clubs. Shopping is good, has a high street and also Gunwharf outlet centre where you can buy designer stuff discounted. Loads of restaurants and bars.

Great shopping town! Always a fun day out with friends or family, lots of places to eat too! Public transport is a little confusing but the trains are always great. Gunwarf Quays is lovely.

Good place to be around, many different aspects of Portsmouth. Obviously many bars and a whole strip of clubs for students, cheap night out and everything so close together including the train station. If you're not fancying clubs though, places like Albert road and Palmerston road are full of local pubs with so much atmosphere. The beach is amazing and such an old classic arcade next to the water and mini golf by the fun fair.

Excellent for students. Everything is in close proximity for a night out and easily walking distance. A variety of shops although a few shops have shut on commercial road now. Plenty of options to choose from for somewhere to eat.

Good night's out and a variety of really interesting places to eat as well as very good discounts at gunwgarf quays. Cinema is only five pounds for any movie as Vue is trialling cheaper tickets which makes a great night out good value. Only downside is lack of greenery.

Portsmouth is a nice energetic city. Best part of it is definitely the seafront, especially during the summer days. I've had some of my best memories created here; the BBQs, the sunbathing and dipping into the sea. Portsmouth also pretty well known for its shopping centres; Gunwharf in particular. Mainly all high branded stores; such as Michael Kors, Dr Martens, Paul Smith etc. Something for all types I reckon. Same goes for the restaurants and bars in this little haven. If you're craving mexican food then you have the options of Las Iguanas or Chiquito. And if you're feeling Italian cuisine, you have Frankie and Benny's, Strada, Bella Italia or Zizzi. These are only some of the resturanfs and cuisins that's available there for you. All pretty good value for money, if you ask me.

Portsmouth is a lovely waterfront city at the south of England. I spend my previous three years doing my Undergraduate degree at the University of Portsmouth, and I absolutely enjoyed every second of it. Portsmouth was a lovely city to study in, with all locations, landmarks and university buildings within walking distance made getting around the city very convenient. The fact that the city is mostly flat makes cycling a very popular and enjoyable sport among people living in Portsmouth, both students and residents. I myself owned a bicycle during my time there and I used to cycle to university whenever I don't feel like walking. The Southsea seafront and Gunwharf Quays (an Outlet shopping facility located by the sea) are my favourite locations in Portsmouth. I have always enjoyed taking short walks, casual jogs or a cycle by the seafront during my free time whenever I need a break from studies. The sunset view you get by the sea every evening is amazing and to die for. There is a huge green field located by the Southsea seafront, perfect for barbecues and picnics during summer, or just a chilling spot with friends or even some me-time. Shopping is Portsmouth was also great, the outlet shops in Gunwharf Quays offer a wide range of popular brands, such as Nike, Michael Kors, Furla, Polo Ralph Lauren, Jack Wills and many more. Most prices are discounted so people do pay a lot less than usual when shopping there. There's also a plenty of decent eateries including Wagamama, Chiquittos, Slug & Lettuce, Zizzi, Brasserie Blanc, Tiger Tiger etc. Some restaurants do discounts on weekdays, with accessible discount vouchers online, making it affordable for students who enjoys some occasional fancy dinner. There is a Casino, an Arcade and Bowling alley, a cinema and a night club located upstairs of the venue, excellent for people looking for entertainment during their visit. There is also a car park available for customers, so people travelling from other towns will not have to worry about parking. Another shopping spot would be the town centre of Portsmouth, widely known as 'Commercial Road'. The street is filled with a wide range of shops such as Primark, H&M and TopShop; and supermarkets, such as Tesco and Wilko; as well as local and Asian eateries which serves Chinese and Malaysian food. There is also a small sized shopping mall located in the centre of the street, known as 'Cascades Shopping Centre', with many shops and cafes within the building. Commercial road is a popular venue for both residents and students alike, and is a fairly family-friendly location. There are two train stations in Portsmouth: Portsmouth and Southsea station located in the city centre; and Portsmouth Harbour located next to Gunwharf Quays. These stations offer frequent trains to many other parts of England, such as London, Southampton, Bristol and so on, which is very convenient for people that doesn't drive. Last but not least, as the University in Portsmouth is spread out all over town, the city is often filled with students. As such, student night outs are very popular in Portsmouth. Located on Guildhall walk, right by the Guildhall at the centre of Portsmouth, are a series of night clubs and bars frequented by students, such as Astoria and Pop World. Night out on Wednesdays are often known as Purple Wednesdays where these clubs are filled with students going out with their clubs and societies, dressed in many different outfits following a theme set by their clubs or society. Night outs in Portsmouth may sometimes be chaotic, but is always good fun. Overall, Portsmouth is a perfect location to go for University as you get a little bit of everything. As for people who haven't been there, it is definitely worth a visit, even if it is just for a day trip.

Portsmouth is a great place to live. There is loads to do, and because it is so tiny, it is very easy to travel around and the taxis are cheap. Anwars is a great Indian if you're looking to buy food!

Portsmouth is great in the sense that it's pretty low-cost to live in but there are lots of things to do. It's nice to have Gunwharf Quays with loads of big brands and stuff to do if you want to do something a bit more upmarket, but also to have the high street/albert road if you want more low-key stuff. There's a good night life, and Astoria is still the best night out - especially Delight alternative night on a monday. It's close to other places like Southampton which is ideal.

Overall the city is a nice vibe made up of 70% students, so fitting in is no problem whatsoever. Prices are good, outings are great also as there is so much to do within walking distance.

Portsmouth is a great student city, the city is small geographically and very flat making it easy to walk or cycle around the city. It is vibrant and fun with lots of quirky events going on. Yet it is cheap, the Southsea area of the city is like an undiscovered Brighton (without the sky high prices). On the negative side, Portsmouth can be unsafe in parts - be careful walking back from nights out alone!

the food is nice as we now have five guys recently opened at gunwharf. the shopping in commercial road as wel as gunwharf however there is a limitation as there is need for more malls such as gunwharf so to have variety. we have dirty disco and I love the fact that we get student discounts. transport links are alright with the student bus also running until lightsout.

Portsmouth has many nice restaurants and places to eat, it also has a few places of leisure such as cinemas and shopping. in Portsmouth there are many things to do such as the spinnaker tower. it has two bif shopping centres with a wide range of shops ranging from small individual shops to big franchises

There's plenty of places to shop in Portsmouth, including a the cascades shopping centre and gunwharf quays with lots of high street and high end shops. There are also areas with unique independent businesses to shop at.

There are a lot of things to do from shopping in Gunwharf to going to the fair at clarence pier. It has fantastic transport links and all the top places to eat and many independent stores and restaurants.

The city of Portsmouth is a mix of people from all walks of life making it a very fun city to study in, there’s plenty of shops and an amazing night life this is by far been my favourite place to study

Great city with great people. Everything is within walking distance from the accommodation. Shops are on every street and the big supermarkets are only a small walk away. The courses are interesting and exciting, meaning one is never bored.

Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy, and home to some very decent nights out. Going out, the anxiety of being mugged or stabbed on the streets is minimal, and you feel as if help (if needed) is only a few seconds away.

There are plenty of places to eat that aren't expensive. There are also plenty of places to go; if it's a nice day the beach is a short walk away from everyone and gunwharf is a great place to sail from or just to watch the sun set from. Definitely a beautiful city to be in however accommodation can sometimes be expensive due to location and demand.

Night outs is good, fairly cheap city to live in to be honest. Halls are nice, easy to make new friends especially in freshers week. And many good shopping centres including commercial road and gunwharf quays.

Portsmouth is a great location for university. Literally everything is within a half hour walk if you choose to live in the student populated areas, most taxi journeys only cost £3 and you can have a great student night out for less than £10. Although the main student nights do get repetitive, portsmouth has a good amount of local pubs that sells quality drafts and the locals are mostly welcoming. Gunwharf and commercial road are the popular options for shopping although Portsmouth has a great deal of other shops not in those two locations especially charity shops where you can find some great pieces. Albert road is a popular option for pubs, restaurants and a good time. The best thing about Portsmouth is Portsmouth in the summer, nothing beats a chilled BBQ on the common with your mates.
