Very sociable place to live, with spacious rooms and a small kitchen. The kitchen is quite small, however we are catered and therefore do not require a large one. The half an hour bus journey to university in the morning is an inconvenience, however Rankin is located in a beautiful location near Sefton park.

Rankin is a bit far out from the actual uni which isnt ideal if you've got a lot of coursework to do. However, it fully makes up for it on the social front as you've got 22 students per flat that really form a strong group. I always have somewhere to go out if im free and there's plenty of facilities nearby; carnibar is unbelievably cheap, tesco express is a 10 minute walk and 'big tesco' is 15, pool tables, the 'herc' hall, large green area with football nets, decent kitchen are all provided. It's all catered so no need to worry about cooking although you can always pop to shops for snacks, food is very underrated here as well. Rooms are reasonable size for what you pay and the social life here means you dont spend long in your room alone anyway! Massive shame it's set to be knocked down next year, there will be plenty of big parties before then!

Didn't choose Rankin Hall, or Carnatic but so glad I got it, the most social halls by far and so much fun!

Endless amounts of fun at rankin hall, being on a floor of 22 helps make friends so quickly as well as always having someone to talk to or hang out with all the time. As well as that the social aspect of the whole area as everyone is so close, is the best at the university.

Great for the social experience, lots of people per floor and many halls in the whole residence. Lovely field and social facilities such as the bar and common rooms. It is next to Sefton Park which is beautiful and nice to walk through. Downside is the halls are very old and outdated, you need to buy an (expensive) bus pass as it is about a 15 minute bus journey to uni. The room is old fashioned but has everything it needs in terms of furniture and heating/ electricity, there was never a problem with the WiFi either. It’s nice being catered as this adds to the social experience, however the food is not of good standard and you are only provided with a microwave in your flat kitchen.

By far the most fun hall. Looks awful in the pics compared to everywhere else but by far the greatest on campus. Was so chill. Will go down as a legendary place when it's destroyed

The social aspect of the halls is amazing as there is great freedom to roam different floors and explore different areas. This means there’s better opportunities to make friends and pick and choose the ones that suit you! There is a great field that is fabulous for those sunny days and the food at the restaurant is alright (the breakfasts are to die for). The rooms are... not very modern. They slightly resemble a prison cell but with the right decor you can make it cosy and homely.

The location is away from campus so it’s good to get a better overall feel for the city - especially with Sefton Park so close. The catered food isn’t very nice for evening meal - lots of carbs! But breakfast is good as you get a full English every day. Very good for meeting people but toilet facilities are lacking!

Being one of the older halls of the univeristy of Liverpool is definitely isn’t as fancy as alternatives, however unlike all the new built halls which on average have about 6 people to a floor rankin has about 20 people which makes it more sociable and easier to meet people. Rankin is in carnatic student village which is catered breakfast and dinner everyday and the food is quite good and means you don’t have to cook. It is located about a 25 min bus journey from centre of town but buses are running every 15 ministers every day so is easy to get in and the loacation is a nice area of Liverpool near Sefton Park. Overall from hearing from others as well I would rate it as one of the most sociable and less quiet halls

Although slightly rough round the edges and outside the city centre, Carnatic Halls is once of the best halls for students. It’s incredily social and is almost impossible to not make friends.

Very sociable hall, had all the party animals however very old fashioned and old school. Room comparable to a prison cell and shared facilities (bathroom and kitchen)between 22 people

Great sociable halls made lots of friends. Rooms are quite nice. Accommodation is over priced and ridiculously noisy though. Halls get very messy and stuff gets stolen from fridges on floors. However it is the most fun accommodation and Liverpool and so I would always go for it.

Catered halls but not very good kitchen equipment we only had a fridge, microwave and toaster when we arrived. Also sharing 2 showers and 2 male and 2 female toilets which was a bit of a squeeze and not much social space. Social experience was amazing and wouldn't choose any other hall.

Great atmosphere for first year, and a good location for running and gyms. The food was ok, but you get loads of it which makes up for the quality

Good for social aspect. Open and meet so many people. Even something like going to dinner creates more social experience as you get to know and recognise people. However, the location of the halls is not great for any means

Very old fashioned. Poor facilities. Catered food extremely average. Expensive rent. Great social. Worth every penny

Rooms are okay but facilities are quite basic. social life is good as is good but could be improved by more variety

The halls is situated right next to Sefton park (great for running). The room a is good size and it is never cold. The catered food is bland but you get quite a bit so you’re never hungry. The showers are mediocre so there is the option to bath. Everyone I have met in Carnatic is lots of fun and I wouldn’t chose a different halls if I had the choice!

Rooms feel and look like a prison, food is adequate, hot water takes ages to warm up in the shower and wifi is terrible. However, the social side is amazing and it's a good fun atmosphere

Great for a social experience, always people around to talk to and have fun with As the saying goes, nobody ever picks Rankin but nobody ever regrets it

The location isnt the best as you have to get a half ab hour bus to uni. The food isn't the best you will ever eat (or even close to it) but the atmosphere is 10/10 and way better than on campus . Worth it

Cons - Painted white walls do give the room a ‘prison cell’ vibe. No WiFi, however an Ethernet cable is provided. My room had little to no phone signal (and limited 3G which meant I could barely use my phone without WiFi), however not everyone on my floor had this problem and so it is dependent on where your room is (mine was ground floor!). As it is a catered hall, the kitchen does not have an oven or freezer, meaning if you miss dinner and didn’t get a lunch pack you were restricted to fridge food and ready meals. Also your keys allowed access to the building but anyone who had this key could get onto your floor meaning people could walk in and out posting flyers etc under doors! No social area on our floor to sit, instead having to use the joint common room or squeeze into people’s rooms. Pros - Beds were comfy. Exactly a 4 minute walk away from the bus stop. Was unsure about the catered element, however it made dinner a very social thing as we would all wait and go for dinner together. Sinks in rooms. Sharing with 21 other people may seem daunting but actually allowed for big friendship groups to form and you are guaranteed to find like minded people on your floor or the floors above. University bus starts at Carnatic, meaning you will not be stuck waiting for the bus unlike in Greenbank. Overall, for a cheaper halls experience you get what you get with it. You don’t need luxury, just a good social setting to make friends in, which Rankin certainly provides. Choose here if you are social and want to go out a lot, expect lots of madness to ensue.
