Clayhill Hall

Poor maintenance and lack of social integration with others due to flats being very self contained only for 4 people with no communal living space almost prison like

The rooms are average and quite old fashioned, there have been a few problems with things like lights flickering and the heating but otherwise these halls are okay

there is no social aspect, the room is fine although maintenance are really bad and it takes ages to get things fixed

Clayhill is not in a very convenient location as shops (closest being Surbiton) is about a 15 min walk away and there are not bus stops near the residence so you have to walk at least 10 mins for the nearest one. However, the uni does provide a free bus service which takes you to penrhyn road and surbiton but it only operates on the weekdays and during term time. The rooms are decent sizes however, room number 1 in every flat is the largest but has the smallest bathroom. The bathroom for other rooms are decent sizes but for some reason my room has the biggest bathroom out of everyone I know. The showers however are a nightmare. My whole bathroom has a mini flood everytime I shower. The kitchen is pretty tiny. Would be difficult to fit more than 3 people.

Clayhill was based around a 20 minute walk from the main university site. The halls themselves were extremely cramped, outdated and dark. Living in these halls did affect my university experience, the kitchen was tiny and hardly any space in the rooms.

Very dissapointed with my stay there. The rooms were very lonely and isolating and there was no real common area for any social interaction. The kitchen was small and doors couldn't be propped open so it felt very isolating. My room itself was good, en-suite bathroom was decent except my shower which leaked often. Overall, I didn't enjoy my stay there and would not recommend it to anyone who wants to be social and not feel isolated.

Honestly feels dead here kitchens are tiny, shower pump constantly goes when your sleeping and it's so out dated needs refurbishment

The accommodation was expensive for what you actually got and all the problems with it. The rooms weren't clean when arrived and had to basically clean everything again before being able to unpack. My shower stopped working many times whilst there and it took them ages to fix it. It just kept breaking and they said they would replace part of it and didn't. Heating was timed so half the time it was freezing and they also charged £20 for missing jobs which is ridiculous.

Location is out of the way and everything in your flats end up not working and it take ages for maintenance to sort it out. Only thing I got out of this place was a good community of friends

Awful place to stay, so antisocial and falling apart. Would not recommend to anyone. Try middle mill or seething.

I found that halls could be a bit isolating. There was a small kitchen so it was difficult to socialise in there. Good location; near the station and a 20 minute walk from uni. Rooms were small with a small ensuite but nice to have own bathroom.

My room was alright, could’ve been bigger but also could’ve been smaller. The worst part was the kitchen that would always be dirty, I ended up moving out halfway because of that!

Flats of 4 can mean they're a little more unsociable than others as theres less people around but means less mess! Nice green spaces for summer barbecues!

Lovely green grounds, huge common room and helpful staff. Flats could do with being more modern and it would be nice if they had more communal space eg a bigger kitchen or lounge. As i got a bigger room i got a slightly smaller bathroom - but it’s so worth it as my room is huge! There is a free uni bus service which runs between campuses, halls, surbiton and kingston.

Clayhill is in a decent location, made very convenient by the free uni bus. The rooms are okay, maintenance will fix most things but may take a while. The free space in the kitchen is a bit tight to hang out in, and the common room doesn't get used by a variety of people. Blocks are 3 flats of 12 aswell, so perhaps a limited chance of meeting a range of people in accommodation atleast.

The rooms are small, I wasn’t given the option to have a double bed at all. The shower is always breaking and there are flies in my room. I never use the kitchen and it’s always dirty.

The facilities are clean but pricey for what you receive. The staff there were friendly but they would take their time when it came to fixing things. You could not sign out of their halls for a period of time so if you went on holiday or home when it was cleaning day they would charge you for missing a clean.

Not much ability to socialize, ceiling falling apart, many leaks, shower floods bathroom, bathroom super tiny, heat doesn’t travel from heater, washing machines only work half of the time, paint peeling.

Clayhill is one of the worst halls of residence. I have friends whose rooms have had to been fumigated for black mould. This is unacceptable and should not be occurring in a place where we pay stupidly high prices for accommodation anyways.

The entire building was said to have been cleaned when we arrived, but was clearly not clean so beware. The place is very hidden from anywhere else - Uni and closest supermarket are a mile away, taking 15-20 mins to get there which can be a hassle. I had a great time with my flat mates though, and the room size is quite nice. Really reliable internet too.

Good location - there is a free intersite uni bus between the halls and uni. Everyone’s lovely in halls, but it’s hard to socialise as the kitchen’s are tiny! There is four chairs and a table crammed into a miniature kitchen! On the other hand, the common room by reception is great. My room is lovely - in every flat there are 3 smaller en suite rooms and 1 large en suite bedroom. I have the large one which is almost double the size, so get on the halls booking site early if you want extra space! The only down side is that one wall is orange. All the other sides of my room are cream, but the side with the window is orange. I’m on the top floor, but the middle floors have one blue-painted wall in each room and the ground floors have one green-painted wall in each room. The halls rent is £138 a week. It’s not bad for money - especially considering it’s in London! There is a lovely green at the halld with built in bbqs and benches for summer, and there’s football tables and ping pong dotted around too. The internet service is good. It’s the same wifi service as every other uni in the uk, so you can travel from the halls, to your uni, to a different campus, so your mate’s uni and it will automatically link.

Overall it wasn’t bad but there are a lot of things they should work on like bus service, security, etc.

To be honest, I hated Clayhill. It was located in Surbiton, and there were no supermarkets around - you had to walk for about 15-20 mins to get food. Plus, in my room, there was no cold water, only for the first 5 secs, then it turned burning hot. Also, I had problems with sharing the kitchen - we all had duties to do that were checked every week and although I would do what i was supposed to do, I would get charged 20£ from time to time because someone would get my surface dirty. Not even including the fact that it is built on the cemetery... creepy.

Expensive, poor quality and nothing ever gets fixed. I loved my time in halls but the accommodation quality was poor. The shower always broke, the heating always broken and nobody cared when it was reported to the front desk.
