Celebrate Christmas with your housemates in style with these festive party ideas.

Christmas will be quite different this year, especially for those of us who can’t spend it at home with family as we normally would. But being stuck at university doesn’t mean you can’t still have a great Christmas. Check out these tips on how to deck the halls and liven up your accommodation if you’re planning to do Christmas with your housemates this year.

1. Decorate your space

Putting up decorations will get you into the Christmas spirit, as well as helping to rejuvenate the space where you’ve been spending so much time this year. Fairy lights are an easy way to make a space feel more festive, or you could go all out with glittery decorations in every corner.

Great decorations don’t have to be expensive. Shops like Typo offer a range of fun, quirky decorations that are also budget-friendly, and so do many supermarkets.

2. Make a Christmas dinner

A Christmas dinner is a good way to bring everyone together. Make sure you know the dietary needs of all of your housemates in advance, so anyone vegetarian, vegan, or allergic to certain foods isn’t left out. If you need some inspiration for a vegan Christmas dinner, be sure to check out this blog

Organise who’s in charge of what – splitting the cost and the work between everyone will make it easier and less stressful – and hopefully the result will be a nice Christmas meal that everyone can enjoy.

3. Christmas-themed activities

You could organise some festive fun to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. You could put your favourite Christmas songs on and do some karaoke, and dance around. Watching some funny Christmas films and playing party games like ‘Heads Up!’ or drinking games will also help everyone to feel more Christmassy.

4. Gifting

Giving gifts to each other and opening gifts together will make it feel more like Christmas back home. You could arrange a Secret Santa amongst your housemates and buy each other silly things to bring a bit of joy at the end of a tough year. For a budget-friendly but personal gift, try making ‘gift coupons,’ where you write down a favour or gift that they can redeem from you in the future, such as offering to cook someone their favourite meal, or doing one of their household chores for a week.

5. Remember to check in with your loved ones

Remember to check in with your loved ones too, whether that be via phone call or video call. Maybe you could adapt what you usually do with them at Christmas so it can be done online. Spending some time with them virtually will be a nice way to connect with your loved ones, and they will appreciate it as much as you will.
