Tips for cleaning your uni house

Find out how to clean efficiently with these tips for sprucing up your student pad.

Being a student is liberating, but it also comes with responsibilities. One of the main things you’ll need to worry about in your day-to-day life is keeping your place clean. Nobody likes a messy housemate!

With this in mind, here are our top five tips for keeping your student pad sparkling clean:

1. Make a rota

If you’re in shared accommodation, make a list of jobs and delegate them. Setting up some cleaning rules will keep the house tidy and clean. If you want to go further, you can allocate counter spaces in the kitchen. Divide the storage so everyone has their own space. Setting the rules out from the start will ensure you and your housemates have a harmonious relationship.

2. Clean your mess straight away

This one should go without saying, but it’s amazing how often students can get it wrong. Cleaning immediately after you make a mess will nip the problem in the bud. The bigger the mess gets, the harder it gets to clean. The same applies to washing up after meals. It’s not always an easy habit to form, but you’ll be grateful in the long run. If you’re eating in your room, make sure you take everything back into the kitchen when you finish.

3. Prepare a to-do list

From time to time, you’ll need to do a big clean. Preparing a to-do list will make things a lot easier for everyone. After you’ve delegated the jobs, plan the clean in stages. Pick one task for the whole house to do together, so that none of you feel demotivated or isolated.

4. Equip yourself

Make sure your house is kitted out with the right tools for cleaning. Grab a multi-purpose spray that leaves your surfaces gleaming and smelling fresh. Drain unblockers will stop your pipes getting clogged by the residue of last night’s takeaway, and a shower wiper will do wonders in your bathroom. Invest in a laundry basket too, so that you avoid dirty clothes all over your pieces of furniture.

5. Make it fun

It sounds counterintuitive, but cleaning doesn’t have to be boring. Engage with your housemates and play games to keep morale high. You could even make the clean into a competition to spice things up. Play some music and dance while you mop the floor. Remember to enjoy spending time with your friends, even if you’re doing chores.
