What are you going to read this summer? Check out the best books you should pick up for summer 2021.

What better time of the year to pick up a good book and just relax than the summer holidays? Whether you are going on a trip to the beach with friends, sunbathing in the park or just relaxing in your garden, reading a book is the perfect way to catch up on some much-needed downtime and avoid the trap of scrolling on Instagram.

For most of us, summer reading means light-hearted, easy to read novels. That said, here is our summer reading list for 2021.

1. The Jetsetters by Amanda Eyre Ward

In this novel, 70-year-old Charlotte Perkins wants nothing more than to reunite her estranged family. After entering a competition and winning a cruise, the family packs their bags to reunite on a voyage that takes them around Europe, uncovering long-buried family secrets along the way.

Ward takes the reader on a trip across the ocean from Athens to Barcelona, and the family is forced to confront the barriers that have kept them apart for so long. It is a story of revealing one’s true self and the journey to happiness. See if it inspires you this summer.

2. She is Fierce by Ana Sampson

For those who don’t want to commit to reading an entire novel, poetry might be more your style. This book includes 150 inspirational poems by women, ranging from classic poets to powerful modern voices.

From civil rights activists to school girls and kitchen maids, Sampson includes poems from an array of backgrounds. This inspirational anthology will immerse you in the work of some of the best literary figures. Check out our other book recommendations from diverse authors here

3. The Switch by Beth O’Leary

The Switch centres on a concept we all feel we could benefit from right now: change. The book focuses on Leena and her grandmother Eileen who both feel stuck in their lives, so they decide to swap.

Leena takes a two-month sabbatical from work to move to her grandmother’s small Yorkshire village. In the process, she meets a handsome school teacher but realises the swap is not as easy as she thought. In contrast, her grandmother is a huge hit in London with her neighbours and on dating apps as she embarks on a journey to find love again.

The Switch is the perfect book for anyone feeling stuck this summer. Whether you are struggling with lockdown boredom or confused about the next step to take, The Switch will give you some food for thought. If you’re considering going to university, then take a look at our guide to deciding which degree is right for you. Or, if you’re considering a gap year, then here are five activities you should add to your list to make the most of it.

4. The Guncle by Steven Rowley

As June is Pride month, this list would not be complete without acknowledging the LGBTQ+ community. In The Guncle, Patrick, once a famous sitcom star, has his life turned upside down when a family tragedy leaves him acting as the guardian of his niece and nephew.

Full of humour, this book will take you on a journey of discovery as Patrick takes on new responsibilities. The Guncle is a perfect summer read to show how the power of love and family can triumph over tragedies.
