Winter boots on frost

You can’t wear strappy heels or flip-flops all year, so here are some recommendations for the colder months.

The winter months are infamous for unpredictable weather, brisk winds, and on the rare occasion, snow! Despite being somewhat cosy and exciting, the changing weather requires a reliable selection of footwear that will prevent any soggy socks or frozen toes. Whether you're looking for boots with grip for icy conditions, walking boots for winter or faux fur boots to keep your toes warm, here's a list of functional footwear you need to add to your collection.

Chunky boots

The chunky boot trend has already begun invading people’s wardrobes as we move into colder weather. With good reason too. You can’t go wrong with a durable, classy boot, that will keep your feet warm and dry, whilst elevating all of your winter outfits.

These trendy boots don’t have to break the bank either, think high street brands like Zara or Urban Outfitters for great quality shoes at a fraction of those designer prices.

Classic Chelsea style boots that can be paired with a jeans and cosy socks combo. Alternatively opt for a more statement piece, with a knee-high boot, amazing paired with a delicate pair of tights and mini skirt. Both are guaranteed to give you comfort in a practical way this winter.

Trainers

Old-school, classic trainers will never go out of style, with the right brand they can last you a lifetime, while looking fun and trendy, keeping the colder winter days bright. Though not as weather resistant as chunky, leather boots, classic trainers will always be comfy on your feet and perfect for layering with some fluffy socks.

New Balance is a brand making a big comeback, especially amongst young people, their trainers can add that ‘retro’ feel to any style outfit, with quality soles giving needed grip and protection from the weather.

For another take on the timeless trainer, with arguably a bit more warmth, consider high-top trainers. Air Force or Converse are always winners, giving some more warmth with their extra ankle height while keeping the cool and easy trainer vibe. Converse goes even further with a range of faux-fur-lined Chuck Taylors, perfect for that extra layer of warmth in the winter.

Dr Martens

Taking it back to the possible origins of the chunky boot trend, Dr Martens are a classic you can never go wrong with. More low-key than the heavy-duty look of other trendy boots, Dr Martens complete the autumn/winter aesthetic, turning any outfit into a Pinterest-worthy masterpiece.

Stick with the classic black boot that will go with everything in your wardrobe, or switch it up and go full force autumn with a rusty red or chestnut brown. Bought brand new, it is recognised Docs can be a little on the pricey side, though they are an investment they’ll last you as long as you need, a cheaper alternative would be to look second hand.

Docs can be found so easily in top condition for a much nicer price, plus second-hand is always better for the planet.

Ugg boots

An honourable mention has to go to the revived Ugg boot, making a comeback this autumn/winter from the early 2000s. While no one is claiming that Uggs are the most practical, weatherproof shoe on the market, it is undeniable that on a nice, dry day, their super cosy interior feels like a heated cloud on your feet, something that we all need.

Ultra Minis are the style that is currently circling the internet as the newest trend, slightly more functional and easy to style compared to the taller boots that dominated the 2000s.

As a cheaper and in some ways better option, brands like ‘Aus Woolii’ do the same style of cosy boot but waterproof, an even better choice for the colder season.
