With 2022 upon us, it’s the time where many of us set ourselves goals that we have no expectation of accomplishing. But, it doesn’t have to be that way this year: here are our top tips to help you stick to your resolution for 2022.

Manage your expectations

One of the most common reasons for not accomplishing your resolution is setting yourself a goal that’s too ambitious. You’re bound to give up if you’ve challenged yourself to go to the gym every day when you’ve never been before.

Clearly define your goals

Be specific about what you want to achieve. Don’t just say, “I want to be more active”, but consider which activities you need to do and how often you need to do them. Think about how long it will take to achieve your aim - bearing in mind that it will take time to break your old habit - then set yourself a realistic target. Taking these steps means you’re more likely to stick to your New Year’s resolution because your goal will feel more achievable. Break things down into manageable chunks and plan the steps needed to reach your goal to give yourself the best chance for success.

Make a checklist

Write a list of the steps you’ll need to take to achieve your goal, so you can tick them off one by one. Looking back on what you’ve achieved can be a great source of motivation, especially when you’re finding it hard to stick to your resolution.

Plan ahead

When you’re coming up with your New Year’s resolution, consider the challenges you’ll face and pre-empt ways to overcome them. By doing this, you’re more likely to stick to your resolution because you’ll be prepared if you find yourself struggling at any point.

Speak to friends and family

Stick to your New Year’s resolution by seeing if any friends or family have similar goals to you. Working with other people towards achieving your goal can be motivational because you can encourage each other.
