If you're looking for ways to cope with stress you've come to the right place. Here are our top methods for getting by when the going gets tough.

Sometimes life can be a bit too much, especially during the long, cold winter months. You can end up feeling like there’s always somewhere you need to be or something you need to do. Here are six methods to help you wind down and relax the next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed.

Breathing exercises

Regulating your breathing is a really effective way to relax your body. An easy-to-learn, effective breathing exercise is the Box Method: you inhale for four seconds then hold it in for four seconds, before exhaling for another four seconds and then holding it for four more seconds. Repeat this as many times as you need to.

This may be challenging at first, but the more you practice the easier it will become.

Practice meditation and yoga

Taking five minutes out of your day to practice yoga or meditation can be really beneficial. Winding down your body and focusing your mind is a great stress reliever.

Sit or lie down wherever you feel comfortable (preferably in a place with dim lighting and reduced noise). Take deep breaths in through your nose and out your mouth. Do some soothing stretches.

Positive affirmations

Affirmations are an effective way to boost confidence and release stress. They are positive statements you tell yourself either aloud or in your head. If you don’t know what to say, try statements like: “I am relaxed and at ease,” “I am enough,” or “I don’t have control over other people’s actions.” Do this consistently and with time these positive thoughts will come naturally.

Reduce your social media consumption

Social media is addictive and many don’t realize the negative impact it can have. It tends to show the ideal aspects of people’s lives, but it rarely reflects reality. It is easy to compare yourself and your life to others, inviting unnecessary worry and stress. Limiting your screen time is an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety.

Spend time with yourself

Take time to do the things you enjoy. Self-care is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress. Whether your hobbies get your blood pumping or are more relaxed, all of them will improve your health and well-being.

Seek extra help

Talk to people, whether they’re your friends, your family, or a therapist. Finding people that understand and support you is essential for your well-being and a good support network is one of the best ways to combat stress.
