The Student Hut guide to the Women’s Euros 2022

Ellie Paintingon 20 July 2022
Women's football has been particularly interesting so far, and the Euros have just begun.

The Women’s Euros 2022 are heating up! Here’s who’s looking good ahead of the Quarter Finals.

The Quarter Finals of the Women’s Euros 2022 are nearly upon us. This year matches have been held in various stadiums in England, like Wembley, Bramall Lane and Saint Mary’s Stadium.

Last Sunday, Sweden and the Netherlands beat Portugal and Switzerland respectively to join England, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Austria in the near-final stages of the competition. These teams will all enter the knockout rounds where they'll be kicked out of the running if they lose a match.

The two teams that end up in the final will play against each other on the 31st of July. But who’s in with a chance of winning? Check out our guide to the remaining countries below…

England

England opened the Women’s Euros with a modest 1-0 victory of Austria, but quickly said no to humility and were soon beating records when they played Norway in front of the Brighton & Hove crowd, winning 8-0. As if you needed a reason to believe the England women’s team are better than the men’s.

It’s said that England is the team to fear this year, as their low-key celebrations after their big wins were typical of a team who intend on staying in…

Sweden

Sweden has reached the knockout phases of the Women’s Euros in each of their 10 appearances and this year is no different. As a team they’ve steadily been improving, starting their group stage with a draw against the Netherlands, but this was quickly boosted with a 2-1 win to Switzerland and a massive 5-0 win to Portugal.

Sweden has made their confidence and ability clear from the offset and seems to be living up to it so far.

Netherlands

The Netherlands had similar results to France, winning two of their three games and drawing against Sweden. The Dutch won the Women’s Euro 2017 so they’re under a lot of pressure to protect this title. At that time, however, they were under the management of Sarina Wiegman who now manages England.

Will this change of manager give the team motivation or will the pressure of wanting to protect their title be too much?

France

Delphine Cascarino scored against Italy and helped to secure her team's place in the Quarter Finals. Overall, they won that match 5-1 and secured themselves three points from the first match. They won two of their three matches with a draw against Iceland as well, putting them at the top of their group.

France may have inconsistent games, but sometimes these shock the crowd like their 5-1 score against Italy.

Belgium

Belgium's win against Italy may have just been luck as their other matches seem to display weaknesses which allow opponents to score, and them to lose. Their draw with Iceland should have been an easy win, and the mistakes that were made would’ve cost them their place in any other group.

However, the team as a whole seems to be getting stronger with each match, so maybe one to watch out for.

Germany

Germany has so far won every match whilst keeping a clean slate, similar to England’s behaviour so far in the Women’s Euros. As a team, they seem to keep possession of the ball through their strong passes, but their head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg thinks they lack confidence in front of large crowds, this could be a weakness in the team that others will use to their advantage.

Having won six of their last seven matches, Germany is the team to beat.

Spain

Spain has had a rough run in the Women’s Euros so far losing against Germany 2-0 but quickly turned this around winning against Spain and winning 4-1 to Finland, securing their place in the Quarter Finals.

Spain has a very dominant possession-based style which could result in success or lead to their downfall, only time will tell…

Top goal scorer: Mariona Caldentey

Best moment: Marta Cardona’s goal against Denmark that sealed Spain’s place in the last eight.

Austria

Although Austria only reached their first Women’s Euro five years ago, they’ve still made it to the final eight. They had a bumpy start losing 1-0 to England in the opening match of the Euros but quickly regained their confidence in their match with Northern Ireland, winning 2-0.

Austria weren’t hammered by the supposed team to beat, leaving viewers with the thought of them having a chance this year.
