Natalia’s Student Diaries: Learning another language

This week has been exhausting. Uni drives me crazy! Thanks to assignments, exams, and dissertation prep, things have been really challenging. I can't wait to graduate.

Despite my academic struggles, I’ve recently started researching courses for my master’s. I want to explore the UK, so I’m tempted to look at unis in different cities, but that will mean starting from scratch at a new uni, with new friends. Thankfully, I have time to make a final decision.

Seeing as study, projects, and dissertation planning seems to take up all of my time at the moment, and I’ve decided to try and make it pleasant and relaxing. First, I decided to transform my room, which is also my learning space, to make it more comfy and inspiring. I started by decluttering my surfaces, cleaning the windows, and opening the shades to let the sunshine in. After a few minor adjustments, the vibe is totally different!

Also, as I am not the best cook, I’ve started preparing at least one smoothie a day. It's a super quick and easy way of squeezing in your five-a-day at breakfast or lunch. If you want to enhance the flavour, you can also add some milk or yoghurt. Between a rejuvenated workspace and my healthy smoothies, I feel much more ready for lectures!

I’ve started two new courses at uni this week. The first one covers global issues, such as climate change, modern slavery, and the Black Lives Matter movement. It aims to familiarise people with global issues that concern all of us. After each workshop, I have to prepare a reflective piece about a specific Sustainable Development Goal. The course lasts four weeks, and I can’t wait to learn about these issues.

The second course is a Japanese language programme. I know I'm already learning Mandarin, but it pays to know as many languages as possible so I’m all ears! Our most recent class was about Japan’s language, culture, and business. In one of our classes, I enjoyed watching a traditional tea ceremony, followed by an online tour of a traditional Japanese house. The best part was after one meeting, where everyone on the course - there are 25 of us, from ten different countries - got to say hi and introduce themselves in Japanese. It was amazing!

I’ll keep you guys updated on the course. In the meantime, stay safe and take care!
