Maintaining a your studies alongside your wellbeing is difficult, but remember that work isn’t everything. Check out our tips for better work-life balance.

Maintaining a work-life balance is really important when it comes to looking after yourself, but it’s something we’ve all struggled with at some point. Here’s our advice to help you stay happy and healthy during your time at uni.

What are your priorities?

We suggest making notes of all your uni deadlines on a calendar or wall planner. This way you won’t make the mistake of realising you had an essay to write the night before it’s due. Then, write a list of any other upcoming deadlines like job or internship applications.

Take time to think about what you need to prioritise. Look at your deadlines and see what needs doing first. Think about how long it’ll take you to complete each assignment and decide which one is the most important.

How do you manage your time?

Sometimes it feels like there isn’t enough time in the day. Good time management takes practise, so if you’re struggling, don’t be too hard on yourself.

A great way to manage your time is to create a timetable to avoid any unnecessary confusion. Be sure to factor in any part-time work and extra commitments. If you plan your time well, you’ll have more freedom to do what you enjoy.

Always plan for the unexpected. For example, if you get invited to an interview for a graduate scheme, you’ll have to allocate some time to prepare for it.

Positive work environment

Creating a positive work environment is really important for maintaining a good work-life balance. Work at a desk, ensuring your workspace is well organised and clutter-free, with only the essentials. Create a dedicated workspace in your uni bedroom or somewhere else in your house if possible.

Avoid studying in bed because this is bad for your posture, and it means there’s no separation between where you work and sleep.

If you can, try to study on campus more often. Why not go to the library or work in a café? You could even start a small study group and meet on campus, which can be really motivational.

Be sure to take frequent breaks and get out of your workspace occasionally and try to eat lunch somewhere other than your desk.

Do you get enough sleep?

On average, we need seven to eight hours of sleep per night for our bodies to function well. You’ll feel more motivated to tackle your assignments if you get enough sleep, you’ll also have more energy and better memory.

Try to stick to a routine that gives you enough time to relax before going to sleep. About an hour before bed, dim the lights and relax, you can always pop on a podcast or audiobook if you don’t quite feel ready to call it a night just yet, but the important thing is you’re away from screens.

Remember you’ve got this! Follow our tips, and you’ll be sure to maintain a positive work-life balance.
