TikTok trends that have been around for a while now

TikTok trends may come and go but the memes are forever

Trends and memes come and go, but Cupcakke remixes are forever.

Something usually blows up on the internet and then disappears before you’ve even understood the meme itself. But it’s not always like that. Like the examples mentioned below, some things stick around for a while, whether we like it or not.

PlantTok

This hashtag unites swathes of different people. From TikTokers helping you find the perfect pet-safe houseplants, practical tips, houseplant tours, to jokes about being a plant parent. If you’re thinking about getting your first houseplant, maybe take a scroll through PlantTok first, they’ll definitely have some great tips for you.

It’s so easy to get lost in a sea of time lapses on PlantTok as people show you how to grow fruits and vegetables from seed. We’re not quite sure if there are enough videos of people showing you how to grow an avocado plant from the pit.

Storytime

The idea of storytime is nowhere near new. YouTubers have been telling stories with clickbait titles for years now. TikTok definitely has its own version too, with its own particular styling.

Either a voiceover or a text-to-speech narrates some wild story, often taken from r/AITA or somewhere else people confess their sins. This is then accompanied by some craft you’ve never seen before, or someone creating an ungodly slime creation.

CEO, Entrepreneur

Bo Burnham’s Inside came out in 2021, but its impact on TikTok is still being felt today. Usually in the form of the “CEO, Entrepreneur, born in 1964” line from the song Jeff Bezos. It’s often also found chopped up and edited, or sometimes in a medley with other songs from the Netflix special.

Those text-to-speech voices

Are you sick of the valley girl voice every storytime or little slice of text-to-speech has? Or do you fall in love every time you hear Rocket Raccoon’s voice in your FYP? 2020 saw the introduction of dozens of new text-to-speech voices and in that time their usage hasn’t really fizzled out.

Favoured by animal accounts and advertisers, these recognisable voices provide the soundtrack to many TikToks. Even our favourite TikTok cat Gandalf’s weekly ritual is narrated by one of the many TTS voices.

Cupcakke Remixes

For the uninitiated, Cupcakke is a rapper who’s made a name for herself by being both a staunch LGBTQ+ ally and making incredibly NSFW music. This music has been sampled, edited, and remixed at the hands of TikTok users.

Her songs have even been chopped up into sound effects to create the strangest of videos. Despite the over a year this trend has been going, it’s showing no signs of slowing down.

POVs

From great trends that show no signs of slowing, to trends that could maybe do with disappearing a little bit. POVs (point of view) started as a way for cringey guys on the internet to post thirst traps. It has continued on this trajectory somewhat, but it also seems that recently people don’t know what POV means.
