Find out how to fight hayfever and enjoy your summer with our top tips.

For most of us, summer means holidays, hangovers, and hanging out with our friends. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for all of us, though. Spring and summer is also the time when those pesky plants start to pollinate, leaving many of us with red eyes and runny noses. To ensure that nobody’s first taste of freedom is spoiled, here are five of the best ways to prevent hayfever:

Take allergy medication

Antihistamines offer readily available protection from hayfever and can be obtained from most supermarkets. Take them regularly to help you survive the summer. Besides hayfever, antihistamines also alleviate other conditions, such as cat and dust allergies, so it always pays to have some handy.

Avoid allergens

If you know what you’re allergic to, take steps to avoid it. When it comes to hay fever, this could mean avoiding certain parks and forests when pollen counts are high. Going out just after it’s rained can also protect you from symptoms, as the water washes the allergens away. Taking steps to avoid hay fever can be one of the best ways to prevent it.

Take care of your face

Your eyes and nose are particularly sensitive; the more contact they have with pollen, the stronger your hayfever symptoms will be. Try keeping them as clean as possible. Wash your eyes daily and, if you use contacts, be sure to replace them daily. You can buy nasal spray to help keep your nose clean.

Keep your place tidy

Ensuring your home is clean and dust-free will help you fight hay fever. Change your sheets and wash your clothes frequently to destroy any allergens clinging to them. Just remember to dry them indoors!

A tidy home is an allergy-free home, so be sure to keep it clean.

Visit your GP if symptoms persist

If you’re really struggling and nothing seems to be working, you should visit your doctor. There are often new and lesser-known treatments available that can alleviate your symptoms. Your GP will also be able to run tests to find out exactly which allergens you might be susceptible to.
