Celebrate St Patrick’s with this selection of green, refreshing, and fruity cocktails.

Also known as the Feast of St Patrick, this cultural holiday is celebrated on 17th March, the date of the patron saint’s death. Get on your green clothes and gather your mates. Here are five delightfully green drinks to honour Irish history.

Midori sour

Midori first spread to the west in the 70s, fell out of favour, and is now making a comeback. This refreshing melon-flavoured liqueur makes for a summery treat for the eyes as well as the tongue.

There’s no need for a cocktail shaker for this one. Simply pour the Midori and juices into a glass with ice and stir, then top with soda water.

Ingredients:

  • 50 ml Midori
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • Soda water

Grasshopper

Lovers of mint choc chip ice cream will fall in love again with this minty drink. Using liqueurs that date back to the introduction of cacao to Europe, you’re sure to love a Grasshopper.

Into a cocktail shaker pour the crème de menthe, crème de cacao, double cream and some ice. Shake until chilled and strain into a martini glass. Top with shaved chocolate if wanted. Replace the cream with ice cream and blend together for a frozen alternative.

Ingredients:

  • 25 ml crème de menthe
  • 25 ml crème de cacao
  • 50 ml double cream

Green screwdriver

Based on a classic cocktail with a widely disputed origin, this twist on the old-school highball is simple and refreshing. The twist is adding blue curacao to change the colour.

In a cocktail shaker, shake together the vodka, curacao, and orange juice with some ice until chilled. Pour into a highball glass over ice and top with the lemonade to taste.

Ingredients:

  • 25 ml vodka
  • 25 ml curacao
  • 100 ml orange juice
  • Lemonade/club soda

Death in the afternoon

Absinthe has a colourful history, involving being banned in Europe under false pretences. It’s also a colourful addition to cocktails. Give this Earnest Hemingway approved cocktail a try.

Pour the shot of absinthe into a glass and drop in the sugar cube. Top with sparkling wine for an easy, bubbly cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 25 ml absinthe
  • One sugar cube
  • Champagne or Prosecco

Whiskey smash

What kind of St Patrick’s Day would it be without whiskey? Part of the celebration is to drink Irish drinks and whiskey is a good place to start.

Place the mint, lime, and syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. With a muddler, crush them together to combine and release oils. Add the whiskey and a handful of crushed ice, shaking until combined. Pour into a glass and top with more crushed ice.

Ingredients:

  • Mint leaves (around 8, plus garnish)
  • ¼ lime, cut in half
  • Two tsp simple syrup or agave nectar
  • 50 ml Irish whiskey
