Find out how to deal with moving to uni on your own with our latest guide.

Moving to uni from a different city or country can feel a bit awkward at first. Sometimes it means leaving behind our friends and families and going it alone. So, how do you cope with moving to uni when you don't know anyone?

How about making friends as good as the ones you left behind? It might not be as hard as it sounds. Here are some ways you can ease the transition:

Group chats

University students communicate loads via social media. It’s a great medium for meeting new people and getting accustomed to your new life. Most courses set up groups on Facebook or WhatsApp, and these groups are your chance to meet people. Look for groups on your university’s website or Facebook and start chatting with your future classmates!

Don't worry if you don’t know anyone, as all of you are in the same boat. You can share your feelings about starting uni, make arrangements to hang out after classes, and start planning the next few years of your social lives. You might even meet your future BFF in one of these groups!

Flatmates and neighbours

Accommodation should be your top priority before moving to university. There are different options; you can move into shared halls, split a flat or house, or live on your own. The chances are you’ll be surrounded by other students, at least for your first year, presenting the perfect opportunity to meet someone new. Find out if you have any common hobbies or similar tastes in music, and let the fun times roll!

Jobs

Many students decide to work while at uni. As well as helping you to become more independent, it’s a great way of meeting new faces. If you find a job that aligns with your passions or hobbies, chances are you'll meet lots of like-minded people there. But don’t worry if you haven’t landed a dream job; you can strike up new friendships anywhere.

Most students end up taking jobs that are compatible with their timetables, such as restaurants, bars, or warehouse jobs. You’re sure to meet someone you like along the way!

Sport

Whether you’re a gym freak or a casual park-runner, physical activity presents another chance to meet someone new. Nothing connects people like a morning run together or a catch-up at the gym. There are plenty of things you could discuss, from training routines and diet advice to ideas for the ultimate workout playlist. If you don’t fancy intense workouts, you could sign up for something more relaxed, such as swimming or dancing classes.

Societies

Universities have many clubs and societies, offering loads of opportunities for students to network. You can find out about these during Freshers’ fairs or on university websites. Whether you’re a keen footballer, an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, a chess lover, a bookworm, or anything in-between, there’s a society out there for you.

Societies give people with similar passions an opportunity to meet and spend time discussing and working on their shared interests. They often host their own events and parties, so there’s loads of scope to meet new faces.

When you move, you’ll be surrounded by students from all over, with different backgrounds and fresh stories to tell. Getting to know them is just a matter of time. Just be yourself, and you will prosper.
