German cities are famous for their Christmas markets and boast the largest number of them in the whole of Europe. Why not visit the several markets dotted around the city of Cologne? The largest market in the city is beautifully decorated with glittering lights beneath the cathedral. Markt der Engel definitely captures the magic of Christmas and is worth a visit! Nikolausdorf (Saint Nicholas village) is popular with children and tells them the famous story of St Nick!

Zagreb, Croatia

Zagreb has won the award for the best European Christmas market three years in a row. Walk around the capital whilst enjoying the heart-warming Christmas carols. Look out for the variety of toys scattered around the city – an amazing opportunity to buy loved ones a special gift. You just can’t miss this Christmas market!

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is famous for hosting the most beautiful Christmas market. Not only is the Christmas market beautiful, but the city itself is postcard perfect! The cobbled streets are separated by pretty canals and interesting medieval buildings. Browse in the Christmas market stalls whilst enjoying a variety of Belgium beers!

Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is without a doubt the best market for Christmas carols! Stroll around the markets at your own pace whilst taking in the breathtaking views of the Eastern alps. You must visit the daily 5 pm concerts in front of the cathedral at least once throughout your time in the city. Bonus – it’s free! Why not join in the singing yourself at the Tuesday carol singalongs from 6 pm til 8 pm?

The Craiova market opened on the 11th of November with a show from the most important Romanian artists. This has to be the most creative European Christmas market. The beautiful Christmas cottages are inspired by different characters from fairy tales. Over a million LED luminous lights link the markets together throughout the city. This is definitely the best Christmas light decoration in Romania!

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is definitely the favourite Christmas market, followed by Bruges. Winter Wonders has fantastic sound and light shows at the Grand Palace. You will 100% get lost in the many stalls and things to do across the city!

France’s capital of Christmas holds incredible Christmas markets which you must visit. There are 300 market stalls in the central squares which are beautifully decorated. Warm up with some mulled wine or hot chocolate and taste some amazing gingerbread.

Valkenburg, The Netherlands

It’s totally worth visiting this cosy Christmas town in the Netherlands. It’s very enchanting and decorated with sparkling lights and Christmas trees. A fun fact is that many believe Santa initially comes from Valkenburg! What better place to get in the festive spirit than in Valkenburg?

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest goes to town during the holidays. This year they won the most beautiful Christmas Market in Europe. There are amazing light shows in front of St Stephen’s basilica as well as musical performances every day. Many say ice skating is the best Christmas activity so try out the massive rink at the market! It even has a breathtaking 12-metre Christmas tree in the centre!

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague holds an impressive Christmas market in the Old Town Square. Traditional nativity scenes occur throughout the day and there are lots of pretty wooden stalls selling Czech souvenirs. Have a break from shopping and grab some fresh pancakes and warm grilled sausages. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the Prague Christmas market!
