They’ll all be on TV over this festive season but here are our picks for best Xmas movies.

Christmas is right around the corner so it’s time to get in the festive spirit. Why not grab some mince pies, get warm and cosy on the sofa whilst watching a Christmas movie? Below is an ultimate guide to the top movies to watch this Christmas!

 

Love Actually - 2003

Love actually is a classic romantic comedy which features some of the biggest names in film. The extraordinary performances from Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson and Colin Firth are enough to give this movie a watch. The heartwarming movie follows the lives of unrelated people as they fall in and out of love during Christmas time. Love Actually boasts the presence of Kiera Knightley and Hugh Grant as prime minister as well as having an amazing Christmas soundtrack.

 

Elf - 2003

This very popular Christmas movie features Will Ferrell who plays the loveable character Buddy. Buddy falls into Santa’s sack on Christmas Eve and grows up being raised by elves at the North Pole. The human elf now believes it’s time to visit Manhattan to find his real dad. Why don’t you try and discover your inner Buddy the Elf this Christmas?

 

Nativity - 2009

The hilarious movie is about a sad teacher who starts a job at the local primary school after being dumped over Christmas. When the housemistress instructs him to direct the Nativity play, the chaos unfolds! You are sure to fall in love with the friendly, fun teacher assistant Mr Poppy! Everyone will enjoy Nativity – there are even sequels to watch later as well!

 

Home Alone - 1990

The classic Christmas kids film features 8-year-old Kevin McCallister whose family unintentionally leaves him behind when they go on their Christmas holiday. When two comedic burglars target Kevin’s home, he must defend his territory by making booby traps.

Why not do a movie marathon and watch the Home Alone parodies and sequels? Even though many would agree the original is undoubtedly the best! 

 

Miracle on 34th Street - 1994

A remake of the original classic from 1947, Miracle on 34th Street is sure to provide all the Christmas feels and magic. Susan Walker has her doubts about Santa Clause but she finally has something to believe in after meeting a special Santa at a department store. This is Mara Wilson’s first film role, someone you may recognise as Matilda!

 

Polar Express - 2004

The Polar Express is an impressive live-action motion. A young child sets off on a magical train ride to the North Pole where he learns the importance of believing to make your Christmas wishes come true. A fun fact is that Tom Hanks is the voice of six characters in this film.

 

The Snowman - 1982

A beautiful story of a young boy and his love for a snowman that he made on Christmas Eve. This movie is shorter than others on this list – rounding up to a total of 30 minutes. But, The Snowman still manages to completely capture the magic of Christmas. Prepare yourself for an emotional and sob-worthy ending, that many describe as heartbreaking! 

 

The Holiday - 2006

The Holiday is a romantic comedy featuring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet who both have bad breakups with their boyfriends in LA and the UK. They decide to swap houses for the holidays, but, when both women meet someone new and love their new lives, returning home gets very complicated. A film which you can watch over and over again without getting bored!

 

Spirited - 2022

Spirited is the most recent Christmas musical to come out on this list. It stars the famous Will Ferrell (from Elf) as the Ghost of Christmas Present who picks one dark soul to be reformed from three spirits. But, this Christmas the wrong soul is picked…! Spirited is a must-watch which can’t be missed!

 

The Grinch - 2018

This animated movie is full of fun! The Grinch hates Christmas and plans to ruin it in the village of Whoville who are excited about their holiday celebrations. This is a perfect idea for a family movie night - the Grinch can be enjoyed by anyone!
