The benefits of living at home while at university

there's no place like home

Going to university is not often associated with living at home. However, living at home shouldn’t be disregarded, as there are numerous reasons why you should seriously consider it.

Show me the money!!!

An obvious but never the less important perk to living at home. You’ll be spending much less on rent, food and general maintenance then your on-campus flatmates will be. This of course, means that you’ll have far more money to spend than your average student.

This extra cash can go towards productive endeavours, such as driving lessons... Although, those Nike air sneakers are looking hella fresh. Additionally, by the end of your degree you’ll (fingers crossed) be less in debt than your peers.

Avoid flatmate struggles.

Who you end up with in your flat is simply, a gamble. For some this pays off, for others…not so much. Why risk it? Are you prepared for half your milk carton to be mysteriously emptied over night? Sinks cluttered with dirty dishes? Or 2AM shouting competitions which keep you awake all night?

Once your classmates start sharing horror stories about their flatmates, you can rest easy at night, knowing you’ve made the right decision to stay home.

Home is where the heart is.

Our late teens and early twenties are years that shape us, as we take on more responsibility and ownership over our lives. Yet, these are challenging times. Parents (and more generally speaking; family) are your moral support to keep on the right track and pick you back up when life gets tough.

You may not always see eye-to-eye with your parents (hardly any of us do) but you can be sure that they want the best for you. So, having them a shout away can’t be a bad thing.

It’s the little things in life.

Homemade food, clean laundry, a stocked fridge, no need to worry about bills…the list goes on and on. Need I continue?

Opportunities.

We’ve established that living at home will save you money, but it will also save you time as many of the “little things” (see above) will be taken care of. This isn’t an excuse to be lazy, quite the opposite. You can gain work experience at an internship, put that extra bit of work into an essay or join a sports team.

Make use of the extra time on your hands. Meanwhile, your classmates try to figure out how to use a washing machine. Seriously. You’ll be shocked at how much time students spend doing menial tasks instead of actually studying.
