If you're looking for tips on the process of applying for a grad job, you've come to the right place.

Applying for a job after uni is a stressful but important process. Like applying for uni itself, it’s a big step for your future career. Here are some tips on what you need to remember when applying for a graduate job.

Before you embark on your next big life adventure, here’s some advice to ensure you make the right decision:

How can I demonstrate my professionalism?

Professionalism is one of the key aspects of any job application. Nowadays, as well as making sure you’re physically presentable, you also need to be wary of your online presence. If there are any pictures of you wasted on a student night on your social media, make sure that only you and your followers can see them!

Beef up your LinkedIn profile with any professional experience you have. Remember to upload your CV here and on other job sites. If you haven’t written your CV yet, here are some tips. Don’t forget to tailor every application to the role with an outstanding cover letter. Keep everything up-to-date and professional.

What options are there for graduates?

Your graduate job application will dictate your immediate future, so you need to be sure about the role you’re choosing. It can be tempting to snap up the first offer you get, but you should assess your priorities before signing anything.

Research the company before applying and think about whether the job is right for you. Think about whether the company’s values align with your views. Only apply for graduate jobs you actually want to get. Trust your instincts and pick the job that appeals to you the most.

How can I boost my employability?

Your degree alone may not be enough to secure your dream job in a competitive market, so make yourself more employable by going that extra mile. Partake in extracurricular activities and try to gain work experience wherever you can.

In this digital age, there are loads of online courses and classes that can help you upskill from the comfort of your home. As well as boosting your employability, it’s a great way to use your time productively and learn something new.

How can your uni help your career?

Most universities have a dedicated careers hub with staff who specialise in helping students to find employment. Check out the jobs on offer from the university’s partners to see if you like any. The benefit of applying via the careers centre is that your university will provide you with a reference.

You may even want to consider working at the institution itself in either an academic or staffing capacity. Again, your careers hub will be the best place to find out more, but be sure to check out the university’s website too. If you’re familiar with any current or former staff members, see if they can give you any advice.

What type of company do you want to work for?

Companies come in different shapes and sizes, from tiny startups to massive multinational corporations with thousands of employees. Depending on your personality, you might be better off at one or the other, so think about what suits you best. Research the role, as well as the company, and cross-reference your findings against your criteria.

Don’t forget about good old word-of-mouth either. Speak with your family and friends to see what they think your best option is, but remember that the ultimate decision lies with you

Applying for a graduate job can be a grind, but the rewards are great when your hard work pays off. Remember to stay motivated and don’t give up. Good luck!
